SOUTH KOREAN mobile phone manufacturer LG Electronics and Microsoft said Monday that they plan a strategic collaboration in mobile technology.
Microsoft enforcer Steve Ballmer has been signing up mates willy-nilly on his trip to South Korea. He even agreed to invest 60 million dollars in South Korea's software industry in talks with President Lee Myung-Bak.
LG said its agreement with Microsoft, "ensures continued strategic collaboration in R&D, marketing, applications, and services in the field of converged mobile devices."
Also on Monday, LG's larger cellphone rival Samsung announced the domestic launch of its Omnia touch-screen handset based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile software.
Both LG and Samsung market Symbian based cellphones too. Backed by the Finnish mobile phone leader Nokia, Symbian is used in two-thirds of the world's smartphones.
And both Korean manufacturers along with others are planning to develop mobile handsets based upon Google's Android software as well.
With Research in Motion's Blackberries and Apple's Iphones also quite popular, the world's mobile phone marketplace is getting more crowded, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile is far from being dominant. ยต
