Indie rock group, State Radio, provides the music for this powerful video
that tells the story of Troy Davis.
The state of Georgia seems determined to kill Troy Davis despite
the mounting evidence suggesting his innocence. Troy was convicted
of killing police officer Mark MacPhail and sentenced to death.
After spending 18 years on death row, the case against him has completely
deteriorated. Only two witnesses continue to back their testimonies against
Troy, even though one of them has been implicated as the real
killer!
Seven other witnesses have since recanted their testimonies and still no
murder weapon or any physical evidence has been found.
The Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles has voted to deny clemency, yet
Governor Perdue can still exercise leadership to ensure that Troy's death
sentence is commuted and true justice is served for the family of
Officer MacPhail.
The fighting between the Sri Lankan security forces and the opposition Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is claiming a rising civilian death toll. In recent days, hundreds of civilians have been killed or injured by shelling, even those located in a government-declared "safety zone." The lack of independent observers makes it difficult to determine which side is responsible in each instance.
Both sides are still bound by international humanitarian law, which prohibits targeted or indiscriminate attacks against civilians.
Sri Lanka has been wracked by civil war between the government and the LTTE for more than 25 years. The conflict has led to severe human rights abuses by both sides. Hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans are internally displaced. More than 250,000 civilians are trapped by the LTTE in northern Sri Lanka and not allowed to leave. Both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE must allow civilians to leave the war zone and permit humanitarian aid to reach those unable to leave.
Our chance to learn from, fix and never repeat the policies that brought us torture, illegal detention, Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib is passing us by.
President Obama has already issued orders to close Guantánamo Bay and end torture. Though the orders are a major step in the right direction, they don't tell us how the world's most powerful democracy chose to renounce human rights and the rule of law.
Washington needs to know that the public refuses to ignore the mistakes of the past. We can only learn from our mistakes if we have the facts.
