Erik Cole, Patrick O'Sullivan,
Justin Williams Move in 4-Team Trade

Even though the NHL's trade deadline has already passed, deals are still being announced because, as ESPN describes it, there's been a log jam at the NHL's fax machine. For some reason the idea of the NHL, in this world of modern technology, still using a fax machine on its biggest day of the regular season is somewhat hilarious. Does the league still hammer out salary cap details with an abacus? Does Gary Bettman get his trade alerts via beeper?

One of the deals being announced is a four-team trade that involves Erik Cole returning to the Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton receiving Patrick O'Sullivan and Ales Kotalik, Los Angeles picking up Justin Williams, and Buffalo getting a draft pick. If only it were that simple.

Nik Antropov, Derek Morris Head to New York in Separate Trades

The New York Rangers have struggled offensively all season. That fact has been driven home of late, as the Rangers have scored more than two goals in only two of their last nine games. Today, they got some help on that front as GM Glen Sather made a serious deadline push to get his team into the playoffs.

The Rangers have acquired Nik Antropov from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for second round and conditional picks, both from this year's draft. In a separate trade, they also acquired Derek Morris from the Phoenix Coyotes for Dmitri Kalinin, Nigel Dawes and Petr Prucha.

Daniel Carcillo Traded to Flyers for Scottie Upshall, Draft Pick

In an effort to improve their fighting ability and all out toughness, the Philadelphia Flyers have acquired Daniel Carcillo from the Phoenix Coyotes for Scottie Upshall and a second-round draft pick. This seems like quite a bit to give up for a goon -- and not a particularly bright one on the ice, might I add.

Upshall has been a disappointment since being selected sixth overall by the Nashville Predators in 2002, scoring more than 10 goals in a season one time.

At Long Last, Guerin Watch Is Over

After days of speculation and holding their captain out of two games, the Islanders have finally parted ways with Bill Guerin, sending him to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In return, they get a fifth round draft pick which turns into a third rounder if the Penguins win a first round playoff series. Long Island, your long nightmare is now over.

The Penguins were busy on Deadline Day last year, acquiring Marian Hossa, Hal Gill and Pascal Dupuis. Today, they've added Guerin and Andy Wozniewski in addition to their acquisition of Chris Kunitz earlier in the week. Yet again, Ray Shero is gearing up for a playoff run and isn't afraid to get some outside help.

Boston Bruins Acquire Mark Recchi

After picking up Steve Montador from the Anaheim Ducks, the Boston Bruins have acquired veteran forward Mark Recchi, along with a second-round pick, from the Tampa Bay Lightning for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums, as reported by TSN. Tampa Bay held Recchi out of the lineup on Tuesday night, and he was reportedly unhappy that Tampa Bay management hadn't been communicating with him through the process.

It's a worst-to-first type of move for the 41-year-old forward, as he leaves a disappointing Lightning squad for the top team in the Eastern Conference.

Olli Jokinen Sent to Flames

The NHL trade action is heating up as the deadline approaches. TSN is reporting on their TradeCentre program that we've had our first trade involving a "big-name" player.

Olli Jokinen was a hot commodity around the NHL Draft last summer, as the Florida Panthers were looking to move him. Phoenix won the sweepstakes, with defenseman Keith Ballard being the centerpiece of the package they sent to Florida. The marriage, however, didn't last long, as Jokinen has been dealt to Calgary. The Flames send Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, and a first-round pick, according to TSN.

Jordan Leopold Traded to Calgary

It's not a surprise to see the Colorado Avalanche trade defenseman Jordan Leopold, seeing as how they're in last place in the Western Conference and Leopold is set to become an unrestricted free agent. It is a surprise, however, to see him go for what seems to be so little.

According to TSN, Leopold has been traded to the Calgary Flames for a second round pick, Ryan Wilson, and Lawrence Nycholat. Nycholat, by the way, was just claimed on waivers by the Flames on Tuesday.

Alex Ovechkin Injured in Practice

With the Capitals mired in a two-game slump following a 5-2 thumping at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night, the news didn't get any better for the Southeast Division leaders in their practice Wednesday morning.

According to the Washington Post, the NHL's leading goal-getter, Alexander Ovechkin, was hit in the foot by a slap shot and smashed a couple of sticks in frustration on his way to get medical attention.

The Time to Trade Gaborik Is Here

Full disclosure: I am a fan of the Minnesota Wild. I have been on the proverbial bandwagon since their inception, and I'm not the kind to switch teams or quit being a fan.

This has been a frustrating season. Marian Gaborik was injured early and has pretty much stayed that way since. The team is short on offensive talent and long on goaltending, and they've relied way too much on their defense to win games. With Gaborik on the way back, the Wild are trying to hang on in the playoff race until he returns. I have a better idea.
