Randy's rambling ... er, writing about games dates back more than a decade. You may remember him best as executive editor of the late, great PSM: 100% Independent PlayStation Magazine. Or, if you're really old, the official Sega Dreamcast mag. Now he's blogging and bent on putting the "OH!" in "Web 2.0"

Yes, we said "
GTA IV: The Lost and Damned unboxing video." So what? DLC comes in a box
all the time. What part of
digital distribution
do you have a problem with? Clearly the digital part, since everyone knows you need a box for that. You know -- somewhere to keep the digits.
In this case, the digits are on a piece of paper. You punch the digits on it into Xbox Live and the content downloads. Ergo,
digital distribution of downloadable content. Let the video after the break illustrate what we're talking about. And kudos, Rockstar -- you've managed to make DLC a packaged product. Go hug a tree.

Capcom has announced its own branded, pre-paid Visa cards, the first run of which will feature artwork from
Street Fighter IV,
Resident Evil 5 and
Bionic Commando. The Capcom Unity Card will be
available online beginning February 17 --
SFIV's launch date, we're guessing
not concidentally -- and offer some interesting rewards for their use.
The most immediate benefit will be a 15% discount off purchases made using the Unity card on Capcom's online store. Every dollar added to these "rechargeable" cards will also grant their holders five Capcom Unity Points, which the company says "can be used in a number of different ways" at a revamped
Capcom Unity website.
Auctions and raffles are already planned, with Capcom developing "a larger suite of rewards ... above and beyond the standard incentives." According to the announcement, these will range from "exclusive access" to beta programs for upcoming games to the possibility of "being written into a Capcom game or comic book" and -- get this -- potentially landing a spot as an extra in a movie based on Capcom properties. Additional card designs are also in the works (we know: "Where's my
Mega Man?").
Most intriguing of all, card holders will be able to send money to other folk's Capcom Unity cards online. We think the timeline will go something like this: February 17, Capcom Unity card launches; February 18, the first underground
SFIV fight betting network using the Unity card is formed.

For this weekend only, Valve is offering
Left 4 Dead for half-price
via Steam. So now, like everyone else with a pulse (seriously,
no zombies allowed!), you can get with the program and start playing this
game zombie apocalypse training simulator. The cost of
civic duty entry: $24.99. In other words, a
steal. And it's only going to get better when the
free DLC hits.

What? The public being allowed into a game's launch event? We've never heard of such a thing. Okay,
maybe we have. So has D3 Publisher, who is going to let the first 100 Joystiq readers that RSVP to
PQGalactrixRSVP@d3p.us celebrate the release of its latest
controlled substance Puzzle Quest game,
Puzzle Quest Galactrix.
The event is being held in
Los Angeles on Thursday, February 19 from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. -- so bear that in mind before emailing. The publisher isn't going to fly you there or anything.
The first 50 "chosen ones" who show up with a Nintendo DS will receive a pre-release copy of the DS version of
Galactrix. They'll also be able to play every version of the game pre-launch and have a chance to win T-Shirts, calendars ... and potentially even a customized
Galactrix DS Lite. To your email clients, dear readers!
Update: 2/15 - 11:40PM EST : Tickets are still available, feel free to email the address above.

Last July, Konami
filed a lawsuit against Viacom, parent company of
Rock Band developer Harmonix, claiming the game infringed on patents it held for music titles utilizing guitar controllers. After six months of silence, Harmonix has decided to
sue back, claiming
Rock Band actually improved on Konami's patents -- and
Rock Revolution is, in fact, infringing on Viacom patents. Confused yet?
The gist of Harmonix's counter-suit involves a claim
Rock Revolution is actually more like
Rock Band than Konami's
GuitarFreak franchise, the design of which is likely the basis of the original suit. We naturally picture all of this unfolding
Phoenix Wright style, but the reality is most likely far, far less interesting. We'll let you know if any sparks begin to fly.

With the 2008 holiday season behind us, this month's NPD sales data brings with it figures showing the inevitable -- and dramatic -- decline in hardware sold for the month of January '09. For instance, last December the Nintendo DS was the top-selling platform, with 3.04 million units moved that month alone. This month? 511K were sold. (It was still the second best selling hardware after the Wii.)
In the battle to decide who's going to play second fiddle to Nintendo, 360 continues to lead PS3 in sales, but the gap isn't nearly as wide as last month (roughly 106K versus December's 714K). Handheld saw the most significant drop-off in sales, with DS and PSP declining 82% and 83%, respectively.
Software-wise, there are only three platforms -- and companies -- to look at this month. Those would be the Wii, DS and 360 on the hardware representing the hardware on the backs of which EA, Activision and Nintendo rode to software sales success. EA's two most recent major releases,
Skate 2 and
Lord of the Rings: Conquest, both made it into the top 10.
Fun Fact: Three of this month's top games have something in common other than their publishers: they all have "Mario" in the title and they're all a bit ... dated.
Mario Kart DS hit in 2005,
New Super Mario Bros. in 2006 and
Mario Kart Wii in April of last year. That's-a some lasting power!
-Wii: 679K
1.47m (-68%)
-DS: 511K
2.5m (-82%)
-Xbox 360: 309K
1.1m (-76%)
-PS3: 203K
523K (-72%)
-PSP: 172K
848K (-83%)
-PS2: 101K
309K (-75%)

BottleRocket, the now former developer of Namco's forthcoming
Splatterhouse reboot, has officially commented on last week's
unexpected parting of ways with the franchise. The move -- on Namco's part -- raised questions about the studio's fate, yet a statement we received today includes word of future plans.
"Namco canceled the development of
Splatterhouse on February 6, 2009," the statement confirms, going on to say, "BottleRocket wishes Namco the best in completing their project." Thought not officially confirmed by Namco, it's
believed that the internal studio responsible for
Afro Samurai has taken on
Splatterhouse.Meanwhile, BottleRocket appears to be forging ahead, stating that, "[The] development team is looking forward to turning their attention to a new project soon to be announced." As long as it's not called
Hockey Mask Gorefest, we think the team will do alright.

It looks like even a crack squad of
bikini-clad samurai won't be able to hold off an acquisition of D3 by fellow Japanese publisher Namco Bandai. That latter has revealed plans to effectively buy out D3 by purchasing all of its stock. Namco has already made deals with D3's board which have resulted in it obtaining a 70% stake in the company. It has offered to purchase the remaining 30% at a share price of ¥62,000 (US$686)
In a press release announcing the proposed buyout, Namco notes that D3 would benefit from Bandai's reach into other mediums (toys, TV, arcades, movies/music); the sharing of game engine technology; cooperative development of mobile titles; and the rights to use Namco-owned properties (characters, etc.) in its
Simple series of budget games.
We'll let you know when -- and if -- D3 has
tekken the offer.

In news of "Why didn't someone think of this sooner?" nature, SCEA hardware marketing manager, John Koller, has revealed that Sony is working on hybrid Blu-ray movie releases containing playable PS3 games. In an interview with
Video Business, Koller said that the first such BD offerings will hit the market during 2009.
"The way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc," Koller said, citing the fact that "a lot of developers" working on movie tie-in games have expressed interest in the concept. "We will definitely see this stuff this year," he confirmed. Sony isn't talking partnerships yet, but Koller did reveal that two to three of these movie/game mashups will be released this calendar year.
Warner Bros Interactive told us late last year that it is extremely interested in the notion of BD movies including playable content. In fact, a rep for the publisher mentioned that, had the timing been better, a demo of the upcoming
Wanted: Weapons of Fate could have been included with the film's Blu-ray release.
We're not sure who will reap more rewards from this news: gamers or marketing departments.

Korean MMO house NCsoft has made more cuts to its global operations, laying off 55 staffers at its UK-based NC West operation.
GamesIndustry.biz reports that those let go were from five departments eliminated at the location, including community support, quality assurance, IT, creative services and localization.
The site reports that the remaining staff will handle customer support, sales and marketing. NCsoft carried out a
similar downsizing of its Austin, TX studio last August.

Namco Bandai has confirmed that its upcoming next-gen reboot of
Splatterhouse -- which we
just saw at New York Comic Con -- is no longer in development at Bottlerocket Entertainment. Development of the game, which was the studio's only project, will be completed, although Namco isn't saying who will finish the work.
When approached for comment on the situation, Bottlerocket told us that, "Last Friday, Namco showed up with a U-Haul truck, took all their assets (dev kits, etc.) and informed management that the title was being pulled from Bottlerocket."
Namco would not discuss specifics of the move, saying only that, "Yes, we have decided to part ways with Bottlerocket Entertainment but we are committed to bringing
Splatterhouse to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. At this time, we are not ready to discuss specific development details about the game and wish Bottlerocket the best of luck in their future endeavors."
The job of finishing
Splatterhouse is
rumored to have gone to the same in-house Namco Bandai team responsible for the recently-released
Afro Samurai. by Randy Nelson { 10 days ago }
Yes, Criterion is making
yet another add-on pack for
Burnout Paradise, but we're not complaining. The developer has
revealed that its next premium content release will be the "Cops and Robbers Pack," which shouldn't come as a surprise to attentive Joystiq readers, seeing as we dug up evidence of its existence late last month.
According to
Burnout Paradise's in-game "Criterion Games Network," the DLC is "slotting in soon after the
Party Pack,
Legendary Cars,
Toy Cars and
Boost Specials," and is "dedicated to bringing the thrills and spills of cops and robbers car chases in Paradise City." Police pursuits haven't been a part of the series since
Burnout 2: Point of Impact, or three games and about a thousand
Burnout Paradise updates ago.
Owners of the PS3 and PC versions of
Burnout Paradise can check out screens of the DLC via the in-game browser. Sorry, 360 fans -- you'll have to wait until Monday, February 9 when Criterion has promised to post them in "stunning high resolution"
on its site.

click to make bigger, wetter, wilder
We're starting to think that Capcom has caught word of our frequent nightmares about the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse. (It's going to happen.) Why else would it release a batch of new screens from
Resident Evil 5 just as we were about to turn in for the night?
Well, perhaps it's to show off some new, decidedly non-shantytown areas of the game, including a sequence that takes place
on boats. (Where the not-zombies can clearly still getcha.) It's a good thing water kills them. Oh wait, that's Gremlins. No, it makes
them multiply. We're confused.

Click to enlarge the fine wood craftsmanship
They say there are some things you just can't make up. The accompanying photos, received today from an anonymous tipster who works at one of Sony's distribution centers, are definitely some of them.
What you see are "PS2 consoles" returned to retailers -- such as Best Buy and Walmart -- then subsequently sent to Sony for credit. We're not sure what's more silly: that someone would try to pass off a wooden replica PS2 for return, or that someone would actually take the time to
make a wooden PS2 with such detail. The question of "Who would accept these for return?" must also be raised.
We'll take a moment to answer "Yes," "Yes" and "Maybe" to the following questions in advance: "Are those ladies dumbbells inside a PS2?," "Is that PS2 stuffed with towels?" and "Is that some sort of Chinese PS2 knockoff?" We hope that helps ease the pain.

Brace yourself: you know that new
Transformers movie,
Revenge of the Fallen? Activision's making a game based on it. As you know -- despite trying your best to surpress the memory -- the publisher was resonsible for the video game adaptation of the first film, which only managed to transform your childhood memories and $60 into
salty tears.
There's some promising info to report on this sequel: It has a different developer on PS3 and 360. Traveller's Tales has been ousted and replaced by Luxoflux, which is best known for its
Vigilante 8 car combat titles and Activision's two
True Crime games.
IGN's story on the game can be summed up thusly: It will have a larger number of playable Transformers than the first film's tie-in, will include a multiplayer mode and will take place in locales including Cairo and Shanghai. The site also lists versions for Wii, PS2, PSP, DS, PC and ... wait, no iPhone? Rolling out the game on Apple's emerging platform would certainly
maximize your profits, Activision.
Check out the teaser trailer in all its "gameplay projected onto a logo" glory after the break.
