CABINET TO DECIDE NEW FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY TODAY

Cabinet Services this morning confirmed that Foreign Affairs Minister Wilkie Rassmussen will table a submission today for the replacement of former ministry Secretary Edwin Pittman.

Rassmussen this week named five candidates in the running for the position and yesterday announced a sixth, the Head of the Pacific Forum Trade Office in Beijing, Rohan Ellis. The other five are, Solicitor General Mike Mitchell, former New Zealand High Commissioner to the Cook Ilsands Kurt Meyer, University professor Jon Jonnassen, former Member of Parliament Vaine Wichman and Director of Pacific Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Carl Hunter.

Ellis was Chief Executive for the then Cook Islands Development Investment Board before moving on to Beijing.

According to Rassmussem a total of fifteen applicants applied for the position and will be up to Cabinet to make the final decision.
