SECOND BIGGEST CRUISER TO VISIT

If one was travelling towards town on the backroad of the Rarotonga airport area you would have thought a new multi 5 star hotel had suddenly popped out of the trees ahead.

That was how a few local people described the upper levels of the "Sun Princess" which dropped anchor at Avarua harbour yesterday for a day's stopover.

The Princess was carrying 1950 passengers according to Marlene Cuthers of Destination Management Cook Islands and of that, 860 came ashore.

People were surprised at how closely anchored the 14 decks passenger cruise ship was to the reef area.

According to Cuthers the 77, 000 - tonne Sun Princess was launched 12 years ago. It has a staff of 600 and is the second largest cruise ship to stop in the Cook Islands.

The largest the Sapphire Princess visited in April with 2670 passenger
