FINAL SITTING OF PARLIAMENT FOR 2007

The Cook Islands Parliament will sit this Wednesday November 7.

According to Clerk of Parliament Nga Valoa this is the last scheduled sitting for the year.

Valoa says there is a long list of papers to be tabled including the repeal of the Vaka Council Legislation abolishing the Village Councils.

The Minister for Internal Affairs Ngamau Monokoa called for the abolishment saying that the councils were not doing their job, cleaning community roadsides, streams and road drainages.

She says the money paid to council members for wages and other costs can be better used to pay workers from her ministry to do the job.

The Transport Amendment Bill is also due to be tabled following a review by the Select Committee.

The bill if passed provides for the speed on the open road to be reduced to 50kph from 60kph and the wearing of helmets on motorcycles.

According to Police and the Health Ministry many deaths in motorcycle accidents were due to serious head injuries for not wearing safety helmets.
