DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN QUIETEST IN 29 YEARS

The successful drink-drive policing on Rarotonga roads during the Christmas and New Year period was attributed to the introduction of breathlyser testing, the current wet weather and increased police presence according to Inspector Tere Patia. Patia says in his twenty nine years with the force, "this is the quietest it has been".

He also said there had been a general improvement in behaviour by people out on the town and taking more responsibility of themselves, and they are listening to police messages.

However he said that there was one motor vehicle incident which spoilt what could have been a totally accident free two weeks. The accident last Friday night was a collision between a car and a motor bike on one of the streets behind Avarua township.

The driver of the car tested positive for excess breath-alcohol and the motor bike driver was hospitalised with leg injuries.

Patia said that helping with the successful Christmas and New Year safety campaign was the road saftey council, public health and other agencies, community support and increased public awareness by the media.
