The Video Game Voter's Network (VGVN) is out to stop a California Congressman from passing legislation that would change the way Mature- and Teen-rated games are labeled in the state. Rep. Joe Baca's (D-CA) bill H.R. 231 "The Video Game Health Labeling Act," would require any game rated Teen or higher have the following warning placed on it:
"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior." Read More »
It's very well known that the Madden Curse is the most reliable force in professional sports. You always want to bet the under on individual performance for any given player in the year that they make the cover of EA Sports' Madden NFL. This year, in a battle between offense and defense, the cover will be shared for the first time by the Arizona Cardinals' stellar young wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and standout Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu. As these are two of the NFL's most recognizable and exciting players, it's a real pity that they're both going to end up injured in the coming season.
Here's a quick timeline of the Madden Curse... Read More »
It had a good run, but print media is dead. You probably figured that one out on your own some time between being hypnotically mesmerized by the glowing box in front of you and realizing that the last time you read a magazine was on a gas station toilet. It's all good; that's what the internet is for. But why leave the old tree-sucking ghost of print in the wilderness like an Inuit grandfather when you can shoot its ashes out of a fist cannon surrounded by fireworks, Hunter S. Thompson style? Here are seven videogame magazine covers we'd love to see before print gets put out to pasture. Read More »
If you ever doubted the ridiculous popularity of Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise, then now's the time to sit up and pay attention. Kotaku relates that as part of a large corporate strategy meeting (presumably something to do with the recent Eidos deal) lifetime sales figures for the company's top three franchises were revealed.
Final Fantasy games to date have sold over 85 million copies worldwide, while the Dragon Quest series has shifted over 47 million copies. Not bad for a set of games (DQ) that have had reasonably small exposure outside of Japan. Third up is the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which has done an impressive 12 million unit sales to date. Chances are you've probably known someone with an addiction to something. It's a heavy word, one that has a lot of negative connotations associated with it. So when the Washington Post publishes a story about a study which says that 8.5% of people between the ages of eight and 18 are "pathologically gamers" who show signs of addiction, it grabs your attention.
Psychologist Douglas Gentile, a professor at Iowa State University, conducted the study on a group of 1,178 people. Using the same criteria that's used to weed out the people who are addicted to gambling, Gentile determined that his subjects were pathologically into gaming if they showed at least six of the 11 signs of addiction. Examples of the signs of addiction included lying about the length of time spent playing, stealing money for games or games themselves, and having to spend more time playing in order to achieve the same level of excitement. Gentile also found that four times as many boys as girls fell into the realm of "pathological gamer." Read More »
Industry darling Defcon is apparently all ready to launch on the Nintendo DS. The well-received indie multiplayer strategy title launched on PC back in 2007 and gave gamers the chance to participate in global nuclear war. UK developer Introversion announced today that it is now looking for a publisher for the now-complete DS version of Defcon. A previous deal with publisher Pinnacle did not result in the release of the game at retail. "Introversion anticipates considerable interest in the title, given the astonishing success of the DS hardware range worldwide." Read More »
Sales numbers often prove that game critics really don't have that much of a say in how a game performs at retail. Gamasutra's confirmed that with NPD stats on the sad initial sales of two critically acclaimed games, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS) and MadWorld (Wii). While both received an overall critical score of higher than 80, neither of them managed to sell even 100,000 units in their first month at retail. Read More »
In a slight case of blowing one's own trumpet, Nintendo has issued a statement today which reveals that for the month of March, the Nintendo Wii and DS hardware represented nearly 60 percent of all hardware sales in the U.S. This figure comes in by way of the NPD Group, which also notes that Pokemon Platinum Version on the DS sold nearly 805,000 units in the same month, making it the second-best seller for March.
"Wii tallied sales of nearly 601,000 in March, while Nintendo DS sold more than half a million, even in advance of the April 5 launch of the new Nintendo DSi system. Both Wii and Nintendo DS extended their lead as the best-selling video game systems of this generation." Read More »
If you're the sort of person that can't stand the thought of missing out on the latest episode of "Lost" or "Fringe" then chances are that someone's told you about The Pirate Bay. The Swedish-operated Internet site is largely considered to be the biggest and best torrent site on the web, but the BBC news service is reporting today that the site's creators were sentenced to one year in jail for breaking copyright law.
The four people currently running the site were also ordered to pay 3.5 million dollars in damages to the likes of Warner Bros., Sony Music Entertainment, EMI and Columbia Pictures. Read More »
Rumors are rampant today in regards to a comment made by GameStop's CEO Dan DeMatteo in an interview seen over on CNBC. The focus of the interview was primarily addressing the consumer's desire for console price cuts to hit before the end of the year. DeMatteo believes that the three console manufacturers need to do this in order "to keep momentum going."
But towards the tail end of the interview, DeMatteo makes mention of a major Nintendo release around the holiday season. Read More »
Former founder of Electronic Arts Trip Hawkins thinks that Apple's popular iPhone platform "is freaking out Sony and Nintendo" according to an interview running over on VentureBeat.
Hawkins' mobile game company, Digital Chocolate, has apparently offered iPhone games since December of last year. Hawkins is quoted as saying that the iPhone "for us was a spectacularly pleasant surprise." Read More »
As promised a few weeks ago, Nintendo has scrapped its Wii-kly Download newsletter in favor of a new "Nintendo Download" letter which now incorporates both the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo Wii. There are two pieces of DSiWare this week: Mixed Messages from Activision and Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games from Nintendo.
Wii owners get one new piece of WiiWare in the form of Tomy's Party Fun Pirate and an old platformer hits the Virtual Console: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure from the Sega Genesis. Read More »
It seems as though initial sales figures for Rockstar's extremely well-received mature Nintendo DS game, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, were not as high as expected.
In a report from Gamasutra, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said, "It appears the industry may have been over-zealous with initial expectations on how GTA: Chinatown Wars would perform based upon the news it had received one of the highest quality scores for a Nintendo DS title." Read More »
When our wealthy, well-spoken, and good-looking friends at Nintendo sent a new Nintendo DSi to GameSpy HQ, I immediately started putting it through the paces. The DS Lite is a perfectly competent platform; in fact, I use it far more than I do the Wii. I was thus quite curious as to why we should be transitioning to this new system, when the previous generation hasn't really started showing its age yet. So how does this newest piece of pocket gaming hardware stack up? Does the Internet browser work well? Are the twin cameras any good at snapping candid photographs? What exactly can you get for your 1000 free Nintendo Points? Read on for the answers to these questions and more. Read More »
