Study: Three Million Pathological Gamers in America?

PC News | Apr 20, 2009 03:43 PDT | Comment

Chances are you've probably known someone with an addiction to something. It's a heavy word, one that has a lot of negative connotations associated with it. So when the Washington Post publishes a story about a study which says that 8.5% of people between the ages of eight and 18 are "pathologically gamers" who show signs of addiction, it grabs your attention.

Psychologist Douglas Gentile, a professor at Iowa State University, conducted the study on a group of 1,178 people. Using the same criteria that's used to weed out the people who are addicted to gambling, Gentile determined that his subjects were pathologically into gaming if they showed at least six of the 11 signs of addiction. Examples of the signs of addiction included lying about the length of time spent playing, stealing money for games or games themselves, and having to spend more time playing in order to achieve the same level of excitement. Gentile also found that four times as many boys as girls fell into the realm of "pathological gamer." Read More »

PC News | Apr 20, 2009 07:03 PDT | Comment

During a recent press event held in London, England, Bethesda unveiled plans for the latest game in its Fallout series. Called Fallout: New Vegas, representatives of the company told the press that this new title is not a sequel to Fallout 3 (GameSpy's 2008 Game of the Year), nor is it a simple expansion.

Fallout: New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the developers of the original Fallout game (then known as Black Isle Studios). Details surrounding the game remain extremely limited at this point, and it is not yet known if Fallout: New Vegas will use the same engine as Fallout 3. Read More »

Fallout TV Show / Movie in the Works?

PC News | Apr 20, 2009 02:56 PDT | Comment

A few years from now consumers of electronic media could be sitting down with a bag of popcorn and watching a motion picture based on Fallout. Similarly, there's a chance that TV viewers could be watching a series based on the franchise on the boob tube. That's because Bethesda's parent company, Zenimax, recently registered two specific trademarks which pertain to movie and TV show rights.

Blog Dwell On It noted that the company owns all other U.S. trademarks related to the game property: Read More »

Ubisoft is said to be closing the title down, and while no specifics are really given over on the official website, there is a reasonably lengthy post which thanks the users and developers of the game alike. Shadowbane lasted around five years in a playable live state.

"We come to you now with regret and sadness, but also happiness and pride. Regret and sadness that it has finally come to this and as of May 1, 2009 the Shadowbane servers will be powered down once and for all. So You Want to be a Raider? Part One

PC Articles | Apr 17, 2009 04:51 PDT | Comment

One of the biggest benefits of writing about videogames professionally is that by combining your hobby with your work you're able to satisfy your research needs while simultaneously enjoying yourself, killing two birds with one proverbial stone. In my case, I've been able to spend hundreds of hours playing World of Warcraft over the past few years without feeling too guilty about it.

I've quit for several months at a time, usually to dabble in another MMO, yet always come back to experience the lastest WoW content update or expansion. In preparation for the 3.1 patch and Secrets of Ulduar, I decided that I wanted to join a raiding guild that was all about progression, tackling the toughest bosses and pushing themselves to experience all the game had to offer. Lots of game journalists play WoW here and there, but very few are in successful raiding guilds that manage to clear content. Read More »

Assassin's Creed II Officially Announced Via Trailer

PC News | Apr 17, 2009 05:41 PDT | Comment

Yesterday Ubisoft decided it was time to send out the official word on Assassin's Creed II, the follow-up to 2007's high-profile action adventure game. The teaser trailer doesn't give a lot away, but now Ubisoft has graced the gaming community with a few scant details -- including the name and background of the new main character Ezio -- in the form of a press release to accompany the movie.

"Assassin's Creed II is the product of over two years of intensive development by the original creative team behind the Assassin's Creed brand. In a vast open world environment, the game invites players to incarnate Ezio, a privileged young noble in Renaissance Italy who's been betrayed by the rival ruling families of Italy." Read More »
