Introduction: Liveable community planning

Liveable community plans are about developing a vision for the long-term future of Auckland city's communities as they grow and change. Input from the community is fundamental to the development of the plan.

Panmure has a liveable community plan already in place. It is called Panmure's future. The plan was developed through extensive consultation with the community and adopted by council in August 2002. It is now being implemented through its action plan.

Ever since people first came to the place we now call Auckland, the area has grown and changed. By having a plan for the future, we will be better able to manage growth and change sustainably.

A liveable community plan is a collaborative, comprehensive framework for managing growth and development within an area that can accommodate increased growth. These areas are called areas of change. They are one way the council is implementing its growth management strategy.

A liveable community plan allows us to identify the small steps needed to achieve our bigger goals. It also gives us a framework around which to prioritise funding and resources to the areas that need them first.

In addition to the community, Auckland City seeks the input of the following kinds of organisations when developing a liveable community plan:

  • government providers of services such as education and health
  • community organisations
  • developers and financiers
  • transport agencies.

The resulting vision could include ideas around:

  • housing choice
  • getting around (walk, bus, bike, train)
  • retail and shops
  • places of work (office, industry)
  • rest, relaxation and recreation
  • safety
  • landscape, heritage and sense of place
  • urban design.

The resulting plan will provide details about how additional households and businesses will be provided for, what resources are needed to maintain or improve the liveability of the area and the actions needed to ensure that the physical and social infrastructure can cater for growth.

It will also include an action plan for making the vision a reality.

This planning process takes time and investment. The council will start liveable community plans in areas of change as resources become available.

The project is within the scope of Auckland Urban Living. This is a council planning philosophy that integrates land use and transport planning and meets the social and physical infrastructure needs of the city.
