Icloud claims to be first free online computer

XCERION HAS LAUNCHED ICLOUD, a free online virtual computer with which users can access their online bits and bobs absolutely free.

The Web-based service offers a familiar Vista-ish desktop GUI and a suite of basic applications which let you share and create text, video and photo files online.

Icloud1

The system has built-in Instant Messaging and news feeds and is available in English, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Swedish and Filipino languages.

The free service offers 30 free applications, 20 free widgets and 3GB of storage space. We'll assume Xcerion will be hoping to generate income by selling additional apps and widgets, as well as expanded storage capacity.

Signing up is pretty painless and took us about 30 seconds, but we found switching applications painfully slow though not utterly unusable.

If you have a few files you want to share, are not in too much of a hurry, and can keep everything you need online under 3GB, it's probably worth a look, but serious cloud computing buffs will probably want to look elsewhere. µ

Cloud will inevitably mesh with mobile

IMHO and then go further.

Our data will not only be accessible wherever we want it, but will actively follow us around predicting our needs like a friendly psychophant.

With secure personal recognition our interaction with the net will always be through our custom interface, with whatever preferences we have set and extensions thereof which we have bought available to us wherever we may be. Apps and media and contacts and favourites etc.

Maybe we will go to a city cafe and our internet stalker app will know how we like our coffee and tell the bar staff which donuts we cant resist.

Maybe it could track our calory intake and book us an interview with diet counsellors, hired by our insurance company, if we overstep healthy boundaries, or incorrectly manage our food groups.

And if you dont want to play with the other tigers, identity tracking will also be an excellent way for the thought police to harass ideological criminals.

Cue tinfoil hats.

@Bob Moe

Yes!
POV-Ray or fryrender should do the job nicely.

@ Fritz

My comment was not meant to be an argument in any form. I just could not see the benefit of this application for me. I can see the clear benefits of IM and email, so use them, but the idea of cloud computing is lost on me.

@Oli

Oli this does not replace your computer. It allows you to access the apps from ANY web connected computer ANYWHERE in the world as long as the computer has a supported browser. This includes visiting friends, traveling without a computer, using an internet cafe and many other scenarios where you are logging on to YOUR account on a computer that is not yours & you cannot for whatever reason take with you when you leave.

For example I had my laptop with me when I used the free internet lounge at Seoul International Airport ... I used the airport's computer that day since the laptop battery was flat and there were no outlets to plug into.

Cloud computing allows you to leave your own computer at home as long as you have access to an internet connected computer when you need to access the clout apps.

Your argument is similar to those who complain that instant messaging and email are useless since you have telephone and mail to keep in touch.

Heh.

Now we just need to write distributed computing software to run on it and we'll bring the whole thing to it's knees.

GroundOS is free-er

I like what GroundOS offers better, because you can install it where ever you want and modify the PHP source to fit your needs. It also will provide a complete web IDE, which I have yet to see. Check out groundos.org to see what I'm talking about.

Free my arse!

Now all I need is a free laptop with free Internet access, then I can use the "free" online computer.

Whoopie!

I dont understand

for this is to work you need a computer, so why not use that computer?

if you are moving about locations, use a laptop?

is there something im missing? or is it just a push to get people to use something that is not needed?

WTF - Firefox support still in early Alpha

WTF? It says that:

"We support IE and Firefox. At this time the Firefox version is still in early Alpha

All functionality of icloud is not available and the speed is not as crisp as in IE. Please try our early alpha version of icloud Firefox by clicking on the following link"

Yeah. Good luck with that :-)
