WHEN Apple Messiah Steve Jobs had an organ transplant, observers wondered how he managed to get one, given that there is a queue for healthy livers in the US.
There were scurrilous rumours that Jobs had paid huge wodges of cash or even given the surgeon one of his laptops as a method of securing the Iliver. What got everyone suspect was that he had to travel to Tennessee to get the transplant when he lives among the other beautiful people in California.
However the doctor who performed the liver transplant said that there was no foul play involved. James Eason, head of transplantation at Methodist University Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, said he had done ten similar operations for curing this sort of cancer with a transplant.
Not that Jobs had cancer again mind you. Eason would not spill the beans and cause Apple's share price to crash. Not at all
Eason said that Jobs was a "special person" who was genuinely "nice" and he did not queue-jump an organ transplant waiting list by coming to Memphis.
Apparently it is all about people choosing where they want their health care. Some people would leave Tennessee to go to California or somewhere else to seek treatment. Now we have people coming from California to Tennessee, Eason said.
He admits that the region is poor and it does not see its fair share of millionaires.
Eason, whose 693-bed hospital is the largest in Memphis, said while patients of Jobs' messianic stature are welcome, they aren't regarded any differently to anyone else.
However he did admit that publicity and referrals from Jobs's case may help Eason, 48, expand a transplant service that has tripled in size since he came to Memphis in 2006.
He said that he has received a flurry of requests to examine patients with neuroendocrine tumors since treating Jobs earlier this year. Of course if Jobs Icroaks it could set the cunning plan back a bit.
Fortunately for Eason the survival rate for liver transplant on a neuroendocrine tumor patient is good. More than 70 per cent of transplant patents have healthy livers five years after surgery.
That is assuming of course that they are not eaten with a nice Chianti ffffffffffff. µ
This has nothing to do with Apple or even tech related. Leave the guy's medical and personal life out of the news, have some respect.
I agree with Dole, you should leave the mans personal life out of this
With the Apple share price dropping with rumours about Job's health, it's hard to argue that there his health isn't related to Apple.
Not to speak badly about the sick, of course.
I don't understand why is this article here, is it to satisfy the author of the article?
I agree with Ruben. Of course this is related. No surprise to see sheep flocking to support their god though.
and how is this "Jobs didn't jump transplant queue" apple or IT related?
He had the transplant regarless of jumping the queue. As such this does not relate to Apple at all.
I can swallow he didnt pay anyone off but come on he certainly worked the system. You dont become as wealthy as jobs without being able to get what you want/need within the rules of the system. More power to him.
Wow am I pleasantly surprised.. I really thought that he had bought his spare parts of some poor fellow in rural india..
Damn was I wrong.....
He didn't jump - he segued nonchalantly from side to side.
It's amazing to see how many come out of the woodwork to defend their lord. Who knew Jobs had so many illegitimate children eh?
This article is related to Apple and IT because Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple, and Apple is an IT company. Controversy surrounding the health of any CEO can affect the value of a company, whether based on fact or completely fabricated. Hell, if he only sneezed it may well cause the share price to fluctuate. Considering his history of illness, it doesn't surprise me in the least that this would be a great matter of interest to investors and stock traders. Keeping it quiet and down-playing it for so long only adds to the level of mistrust some may have for Apple.
But he did scam the system. Transplants are collected nationally and are not giving out to the sickest in the country first. Organs are spread out between the states (where possible) and then giving to the sickest in said state. Jobs might not have been sick enough in his home state to get a transplant so he traveled to another stated to cue jump and most likely displaced someone else from an organ.
Of course this is only practical if you have money to run all over the various states to get yourself setup. If you are poor you are stuck in your own state waiting. So once again the rich get health care first.
Or Apple wouldn't have to lie about the severity of his health problems so many times.
That's genuine journalism and I like to know about that.
Nevertheless I'd rather read biased news about evil companies than biased reviews of $5000 laser printers or something.
If there's a boxer accused of deliberately taking a fall to make somebody some money in a match, chances are that if you ask the boxer's manager, he'll deny the plan too.
Why would the surgeon who put the organ in admit to helping him jump the line, either? Despite what this doc seems to be saying, being a "nice" guy won't get you an organ sooner.

Nick, you've just plumbed new depths of gutter journalism. You're a sad pathetic creature without an atom of compassion.
The best thing that could ever happen to Apple would be for Jobs to drop dead. Sure, the stock would drop for a bit, but then the corporation would finally be freed from dependency of a false god.
They could then develop the company in any beneficial way necessary without the need for such things as gag orders, or any other draconian Nazi oppression technique to try and maintain a delusive quality image.
Then they could actually start to develop REAL quality products.
OR - YOU could drop dead. Then we could start to see some REAL quality posts!
But, then, ALL gods are false and created by man and if one is killed off it will be replaced by another. Same as there will be stupid blogs and posters to blogs even if you were to die.
It's not the fault of blogs, it's just the natures of some people.
Nick, old boy.
You forgot the fava beans. Great with a nicely aged Chianti.
the Mad Winemaker
Superb. Typical of why I keep coming back to The Inq, friction!
look up the chinese mobile killing buses, they remove the organs on the way to the plane, it then heads high speed on a G7 or what ever for the rich man
thats how he got it so quick
its sickening
Some people tend to select health care where they think best fit their need and requirement, I recall seeing Robin Williams on Conan O'Brian show saying Robing went out of state for his cardiac related surgery.
So if Jobs think Tenn. has the best surgeon and medical professional available, surely he will not gamble his life and his health somewhere else.
But if the question is how fast did he got his new liver, let's see, probably the Foxconn guy that jump out of the window liver was harvested for Jobs.
With money, you can find a match in China, pay huge sum of money and hand carry it to US for immediate operation.
He just got an organ from a worker in china that got caught stealing prototype iphones and fell off a roof....
he's such a nice guy....
