R.E.M.’s “Accelerate” Rehearsal Gigs Turn Into “Olympia” Live LP

8/25/09, 11:29 am EST

In July 2007, R.E.M. booked five nights of shows at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre and dubbed the performances as a “working rehearsal” as they tested out new tunes in front of small crowds of die-hard fans (read Rolling Stone’s report from one of the gigs here). Many of the songs from the concerts ended up on R.E.M.’s 2008 album Accelerate, and now the highlights from the five shows will be featured on the upcoming double-disc set Live at the Olympia, due out October 27th.

In addition to the 39 tracks from the show, a deluxe version of Olympia will feature concert and backstage footage from French director Vincent Moon. A sampling of Moon’s work can be seen in his video for “Living Well Is The Best Revenge,” the opening track on both Accelerate and Live at the Olympia, above.

The set includes embryonic versions of Accelerate tracks — the single “Supernatural Superserious” is still called by its original name “Disguised” on this collection — but Olympia also features hits like “So. Central Rain” and “Drive,” plus deeper cuts from the band’s discography like “Disturbance At the Heron House” and four-fifths of their debut Chronic Town EP. There’s also two still-unreleased Accelerate-era tracks, “On the Fly” and “Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance.”

Didn’t R.E.M. just release a live album, also recorded in Dublin, less than 2 years ago??

I used to love REM. After “Green” I stopped (although Monster got my attention). No reason. Still released good music but by then I was like what…. 8 disks in. Now I realize I should have kept up.

Great vid. Great song. I will pick up the live album and perhaps go back to catch up on what I’ve missed which equals the original output (volume wise) of what I had in the beginning.

What gives with the negatory comments? Why should a band “go away” and stop doing what they love? No one is taking away your “good” memories man. If ya don like em, don buy da tunes. Now go listen to your Jonas Brothers CD.

Hey Stipe. Those hats you give away are cheap. and ugly. time for a break up and farewell tour.
its over.

Go away R.E.M. and let us have GOOD memories of you! All they put out now is CRAP and continue to milk it for all they can….The curtain came down many years ago!

REM rock. They are still one of the best rock bands around. Every album has a couple of absolute classics on it and even the not as good songs are still better than most of the crap around today. I love the way Michaels lyrics and delivery can give you a nostalgic feeling or can actually touch you. He said something once about not wanting to actually tell a story but for each line to deliver some sort of allusion to a feeling or thought. “a paperweight, a junk garage, a winter rain, a honey pot” lines like that evoke images of depression and melancholy or the pure unreserved love for someone you feel is conveyed perfectly in a song like “at my most beautiful”. The monster album I put up with Zep 4 or Back in Black as one of the best hard rock albums ever. Accelerate was a real return to form ” Living well” and “hollow man” are classics. Only thing is I thought they were releasing a new album soon not a live one ? not that this dosent sound sick but Im always waiting for their new stuff

great, every time its get harder and harder gets bands like them, REM is one of its kind, i’ll wait for the release date, by the way, anyone knows the track list for the dvd?

Having attended one of the five nights of this “working rehearsal” series, I am quite excited about its official release….looking forward to it more than the actual ACCELERATE lp…and why they failed to include “Staring Down the Barrel” on ACCELERATE is beyond me! It’s one killer slap-you-upside-the-head rock tune. Rock on, REM, rock on.

R.E.M. ARE BRILLIANT SOUTHERNERS WHO HAVE COME A LONG WAY FROM THE KUDZU VINES-but keep away if y’all don’t appreciate what Michael is writing about. On Accelerate, Cuyahoga, Driver, Drive and Occupation, he is angry! Mr. Stipe tells the truth because he will set America even if Obama has trouble because honestly I don’t see real change coming at all. On Until and Gardening, when Michael cries “America is in ruins,” he is inheriting a Dixie Tradition of the late great Southern poets
-among them Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner
and Ronnie Van Zant. Deservedly so, Michael Stipe belongs in that group. May R.E.M. rock hard forever. You know what the initials really stand for?
Really Excellent Music. R.E.M. DID SOMETHING ELSE-They were the Southern band who took Dixie all the way up to the top of the charts. R.E.M. will stay #1 forever. Thanks Michael for inspiring me! I will turn Olympia way up loud up to eleven! Peace!
