Canceled Game Shows Polls: Round 2

Wednesday January 14, 2009
The preliminary rounds are over in our series of Canceled Game Show polls, and now we're moving on to the semi-finals. The top four vote-getters from each of the six polls will now be facing off to earn a spot in the finals.

For the first poll of round two, we have the fourth-place finishers from each preliminary poll. Most of the titles here aren't surprising at all! From classic games like High Rollers to last year's failed Duel, each one of these shows has a distinct and memorable personality and solid game play. I have to admit to a soft spot for both Win, Lose, or Draw and Rock & Roll Jeopardy - these shows were among the first game shows that I watched regularly, rather than just catching them when I could. So I'm really happy to see they both made the cut!

Voting begins now! Previous polls are still open for fun, but all results for the rest of the round have been tabulated. If you'd like to see how your favorite shows fared, here are all of the preliminary polls: One last thing. I got an e-mail asking me where and when the chosen revival will air, so I want to be very clear on this. These polls are for fun, and have no bearing whatsoever on which game shows we'll actually see being brought back for a fresh run. I would love it if the networks and production companies were watching and taking note of your opinions, but that's not why these polls are offered. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me or leave a note in the comments section.

That said, let the voting begin!

How NOT to Host a Live Call-In Quiz Show

Wednesday January 14, 2009
We all know that feeling you get when you're waiting for a phone call that just doesn't come. Well, imagine having that feeling while you're on live television, and your job is to get people to call you. The nation is watching, your bosses are pressuring you to solicit calls, and yet the phone just won't ring.

That's exactly what happened to Adela Lupse, who hosts a live call-in quiz show on the National TV network in Romania. After presenting the intro and trivia, no one called in to play the game. Ms. Lupse must have been having a bad day, because her reaction was to completely flip out. She shouted, screamed, bashed the phone receiver into the telephone base, and then threw the phone on the ground and stomped on it. According to British website Metro, she hollered, "I want the phone to ring now! Now! Call me now!" And all this on live television.

Not surprisingly, Ms. Lupse was fired from her job. She'd been hosting the show for three years, which I guess was just long enough to get her to snap under the pressure. To make things worse, the Romanian TV watchdog slapped the network with a hefty fine, and handed the quiz show an "X" rating due to violence. It can now only be aired after 10pm.

I know that a post like this one is nothing without video, so here you go - you can catch Adela Lupse's performance on YouTube. It's hilarious, it really is. Especially the very end when she calms down a little.

Since Ms. Lupse is currently out of work, maybe GSN should consider bringing her on. She'd certainly liven things up over there!

Trivial Pursuit: America Plays Not Expected to be Renewed

Tuesday January 13, 2009
I'm sure this news isn't going to come as a shock to most of you, but Broadcasting & Cable is predicting that Trivial Pursuit: America Plays will not be renewed for a second season.

This year's NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) conference will run from January 26th to 29th, and this is where many syndicated programs are picked up by networks. Most of the new syndicated shows, from game shows to talk shows to court shows, face an uncertain future at this point due to lower than average ratings and the current economic situation.

One bright spot for game show fans is the expectation that a syndicated version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? will be picked up and moved into the September 2009 lineup of new programs.

Trivial Pursuit: America Plays has really suffered in the ratings wars, however. The show usually ranks just below Family Feud, at the bottom of the syndicated game show heap. I've heard from many of you that you've had your questions appear on Trivial Pursuit and been paid your share of the winnings when America's Team is successful, so it's a little sad to see the end of a fun, interactive game. What do you think is the main reason TPAP's ratings have suffered so badly? Lack of publicity? Poor hosting? Flawed game concept? Or a combination of things?

Howie Mandel Hospitalized in Toronto - Update: Released

Tuesday January 13, 2009
Howie Mandel, who of course hosts Deal or No Deal in both syndication and prime time, was taken to the hospital early last night due to an irregular heartbeat. According to the CBC, he had collapsed in his hotel room. When emergency crews arrived, he was conscious and talking.

Mandel was in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, filming segments for his new hidden camera show Howie Do It. His publicist has insisted that Howie did not have a heart attack, and is currently being monitored by doctors. He's expected to be released from the hospital sometime today, and back to work.

Maybe the fact that he's currently NBC's last hope for decent ratings is starting to put too much pressure on the guy? All joking aside, we hope Howie is back on his feet soon, and that his condition isn't too serious.

UPDATE: Howie Mandel has been released from St. Michael's hospital in Toronto after being monitored overnight. Apparently he fainted twice in his hotel room before emergency crews arrived. According to The National Post, Mandel's mother was there and told the paper, "I saw him and he just fainted. He just went out. It was just horrendous. I don't know what happened."
