University of Central Lancashire claims first university iPhone App to help staff and students

Written by Dave Bailey

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has developed what it claims is the first iPhone app available at a UK university to help staff and students.

UCLan learning and information services director Michael Ahern said students today have busy lives due to the need to balance their studies, part-time work and social lives.

"UCLan's iPhone App recognises their busy lifestyles, and ensures we are able to support students so that they are able to get the most from the latest advancements in technology,” he said.

The application was developed during the summer holiday and makes use of fast web-mail access, a comprehensive library catalogue, staff directory, and a list of campus facilities. Students are also given the option to top up their printing accounts or book a meeting room in any of the university libraries by downloading the application.

In the future UCLan plans to make use of the iPhone’s location functionality to improve the search of services across campus, and also plans to develop an innovative "news" service.

The app is available free from Apple's App Store and is supported by both the iPhone and iPod touch.
