Australians don't really know what to do with Halloween. While countries such as the US and Britain embrace this event by dressing up, carving out pumpkins and lighting bonfires, it somehow doesn't seem right starting fires in our bushfire season.
But it's not like Thanksgiving. Aussies can't just say, "Ah, it's a Yank thing."
So, we're stuck with it.
And so, tonight, we'll see a parade of odd tiny shapes - and a few big kids - traipsing through the streets armed with an arsenal of "tricks" (most likely eggs or toilet paper) on the hunt for sugar.
It's enough to make anyone wonder why bother with the silly Celtic ceremony anyway? Of course, there will always be those who are keen for a bit of a dress-up. Here in Australia, the Halloween pumpkin has been the hottest shopping item of the week.
Some parents have decided to police the lolly runs with their kids, others have decided to let their kids hunt in packs. Other parents have told their kids they can watch, but they won't be involved in the proceedings. It's a real problem for some families.
I'm not bothered whether we have a proper Halloween or not, but sooner or later Australia has to decide: are we in or are we out? Do we drop the whole idea or do we embrace it properly?
Tell us what you think below. And how will you be spending Halloween night?
