Flap over PM’s construction material leads to calls to cut back on protection of journalistic sources
Flap over PM’s construction material leads to calls to cut back on protection of journalistic sources
The crisis within the Council for Mass Media in Finland (CMM), the professional watchdog for journalistic ethics, escalated on Friday, when a second member, Pekka Iivanainen, announced his resignation. Iivanainen joined the body’s Chairman Pekka Hyvärinen, who quit on Thursday to protest a decision by the council to exonerate the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) in a case involving allegations that Centre Party leader and current Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen had improperly received a gift of construction material for his house. There are fears that the controversy could lead to the weakening of a journalist's right to protect sources of information.

EU report: Many Somalis in Finland suffer frequent violence and threats
EU report: Many Somalis in Finland suffer frequent violence and threats
Finland’s Somali community, or at least a portion of its members, experience more threats, violence, or serious harassment than any other minority in Europe. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights reported on Friday on the results of a fresh study documenting discrimination against minorities in Europe. The study found that 74 instances of threats or actual violence were reported for every 100 Somalis who were interviewed. However, the number of Somalis who had experienced racist violence was smaller than the figures might suggest, as the crimes often accumulated on certain individuals in certain areas.

Nokia to lay off 2,000 workers at Salo plant for up to three months in 2010
The current growth prospects for Nokia’s mobile phones manufactured in Salo in the southwest of Finland are weak, which is why the mobile phone giant informed its staff at the Salo plant on Thursday that it plans to lay off all 2,000 workers for up to three months in 2010. ”We will be constantly following the situation, being ready to change our plans accordingly”, states Nokias internal communiqué. Nokia anticipates that the handset market will contract by some 7% this year from 2008. Salo is the location for the manufacture of some of Nokia's most expensive and sophisticated products, tailored to telecoms operators in Europe.

The last President?
The last President?
Tarja Halonen might have gone down in history as a president who dared give up the last trappings of presidential power. The open dispute with the government on who may and who may not represent Finland at summits of the European Union, and under what circumstances, has shown otherwise.
