Reports: 'Spider-Man 4' indefinitely delayed

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies, News

Sony has decided to push back the start of production on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, a Sony source confirms to Variety. (The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.) The film, starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi, was to have begun shooting in February. The studio does not yet know when the film will get rolling, according to the reports. Last month, Raimi and co. hit the pause button on pre-production in order to do further work on the script. It is now unliklely that Spidey 4 will meet its announced May 6, 2011 release date.

This must have to do with Avatars success. They are going to rework it to make it better and bigger and 3D.

    • Chip H

Possibly, although I really hope Hollywood doesn’t get the wrong message. The naysayers can claim the 3D all they want for Avatar’s success, but 3D films are nothing new, nor is the potential increased ticket prices, it’s that Avatar is a film that, for many, is a very good to a very great film that is enhanced with the 3D representation. However, they can’t forget that a higher ticket price equals a higher bar to get the audience in the theater. If they start slapping 3D into every “big” film without a good reason, it could backfire (upcoming Shrek sequel, I’m looking at you ;) ).

I thought Tobey quit the series

      • Menchy

Well his career hasn’t exactly been lucrative since then…

      • HV

Menchy-I beg to differ. Have heard of Brothers? Tobey is nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globes for his performance in that.

    • Joe

They better not be, converting spiderman into 3d for a fourth movie is stupid and very risky. I’m not a fan of 3d, avatar did it right though, sam raimi would probably make a massive mess out of it.

      • Eyeball

There is nothing in the world that James Cameron can do better than Sam Raimi.

      • MattyB

ITA with Eyeball. Sam Raimi would make a totally kick-ass 3-D movie.

    • Jerry

From what I read at IGN, Raimi “hated” the script. I wish they would just leave the series alone, but I know that Sony wants that money, and even a mediocre Spidey film will be profitable.

      • Dan

Actually I think the delay is because they are trying to figure out how to put nipples on the spidey suit.

    • crispy

I like the way you think! Avatar is the best movie ever made. History will be divided into BA (before Avatar) and AA (after Avatar). Yeah, it’s that good.

      • Eyeball

        no, it really isn’t.

it is the same exact movie as Pocahontas. seriously. google “avatar=pocahontas”. you take a story summary of pocahontas, scratch out the names and change them to the characters in ‘avatar’, and it is EXACTLY THE SAME.

      • michelleeee

i agree. avatar looked cool, but the story wasn’t exactly groundbreaking.

      • terryatl

to Eyeball..lol you are right. Even though Avatar was good the only thing missing was Vanessa Williams sing “Colors of the Wind”

if it’s anything like spiderman3, i’m fine if they don’t release it period. they need a new director and new look for this franchise.

    • hc

agreed. Spiderman 3 was horrible, Hollywood crap. Love Spiderman, but you can’t kill off Venom in less than 5 minutes worth of screen time!

      • Ray

I agree. Venom should have been something building from the first movie.I wish they would do like they did with the Hulk and just redo Spider-Man 3 and act like it never happened.

      • Anna

Spiderman 3 suffered from the studio interfering in the plot, which means that you should be more worried because they’re probably going to hire a director they have more control over not less. This isn’t all that different from what happened with the third X-Men movie.

    • RPM

hc, great minds must think alike! I was going to post that exactly as you phrased it.

    • Celia

I agree. I just re-watched it over the Holidays and it’s pretty bad. The storyline is all over the place. And the special effects were bad. I hope they take their time with the fourth one so it can be as great as the first two movies.

    • Racine

      AMEN!

  • Briana

Won’t be seeing it either way.

  • Brooke

They killed Harry so I wasn’t that invested anyway.

    • Wendy

Agreed…no need to watch if James Franco isn’t in!

      • A

Seriously, getting rid of James Franco was the icing on the horrible cake that was Spiderman 3.

  • 4rocket

Good. Personally, the buck should have stopped at SM2. I hate it when Hollywood capitalizes on a commercially successful film by putting out sequel after sequel after sequel in an attempt to squeeze every penny out of it. It kills the movie. Seriously, unless the movie was based on a series of books (like Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Twilight), just put the limit at 2. Four movies is overkill, really. Especially nowadays, filmmakers don’t have that magic touch to create a great film franchise like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Know when you’ve reached your creative peak with something and let it go. Better to end a franchise on a high note then to keep rehashing it and make people sick of it.

    • dusen

While I agree with your philosophy, the reality as long as studios see potential profits, they will continue to squeeze every last potential dollar out of a franchise. Hence Spiderman 4.

  • J.

If they’re going back to improve the script, I’m good with that. Just so long as they produce a decent product. Plenty of decent stories out there for Spider-Man.

  • Caitlin

I hope it’s good. Spider-man and Spider-man 2 were good movies. So the people behind the movies are capable of making Spider-man 4 a good movie. Sadly, it’s a sequel, and Spider-man 3 sucked.

  • JT

They should stop while they’re behind

    • Ambar Seivom

      Agreed!

  • Gerald H

If the delay in production results in Spidey 4 being a quality movie that rejuvenates the series, then I’m all for the delay. Spider-Man was such a colossus letdown, another stinker WILL kill the series and as a lifelong fan of Marvel Comics in general and Spider-Man in particular, I do not want to see that. To borrow from the old SOS Band song,(Sam Raimi)”Take your time, do it right”.

  • James T.

    Batman & Robin anyone?

    • Monica

      No thanks…

  • junierizzle

They should have done that on Spiderman 3.

I agree with them probably trying to make it 3D. I love how Hollywood just won’t let it die.
They finally got what they were looking for with AVATAR.

  • mrgnexus

If the rumors are true and this delay is due to a fight between Raimi and Sony over the villain(s) and the story, then I hope it dies right now. Sony apparently wants to have a current villain (whoever that is) to appear instead of the Vulture.

An earlier post took Raimi to task for how terrible Spidey 3 was. I don’t think Raimi was the problem with that film.

All evidence points to Sony demanding that Venom (bleh) be in it regardless of what the director wanted. Everything involving Venom in S3 felt shoehorned into a what could have been a great movie featuring Sandman. THIS interference was probably the cause of that movie’s poor story.

  • Jeff W.

There was a time when I would have been disappointed in this news. However, after the train wreck that was Spider-Man 3 I couldn’t care less.

  • Craxy D

VULTURE?! Dear God, NO. My vote is for Kraven the Hunter or the Lizard. Those on the list of Spidey’s remaining villains are too outdated other than maybe Carnage or Rhino.

    • The Truth

Vulture is one of Spidey’s big bad guys, if done right it should be good. 2 of the 3 movies were excellent, number 3 wasn’t bad but wasn’t good either. My problem is the rumor of Anne Hathaway as the Vultress, probably so they can continue with the 2 villians a movie idea. They don’t need to be altering characters. Felicia Harding was the Black Cat and Anne Hathaway would make an awesome Black Cat. She would need to bulk up a bit though to fit the physical side of the part. She showed potential in Get Smart a good trainer could push her further along. From what she displayed in her past movies she would nail Black Cat’s persona. I have high hopes they will turn the franchise around in #4, but if they don’t they need to put it to rest.

  • Jackie

Ok, I don’t know the comics well at all, but a friend of mine told me that Mary Jane’s fiancé from Spiderman 2 turns out to be a werewolf, and Peter Parker’s professor (say that five times fast), the one with only one arm, turns into a villain too. Couldn’t they do something with that? Just so they’re not throwing out random villains left and right (hello, Spiderman 2!) and instead using someone that’s been there all along.
