SAN ANTONIO—Josh Shirley recovered a blocked field-goal try and raced 77 yards for a touchdown to highlight the West?s 30-14 victory over the East at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday.

Shirley, a linebacker from Fontana (Calif.) Kaiser who has not announced his commitment for next season, picked up the loose ball after it was blocked by Cassius Marsh. Marsh, a defensive tackle from Westlake Village (Oaks Christian), Calif., has committed to LSU.

"It bounced up and I saw it, and it was like the pearly gates of heaven opened up right after that," Shirley said.

The game featured the top high school seniors from the recently completed season.

Sharrif Floyd of Philadelphia, a 310-pound defensive tackle, had two quarterback sacks and another pressure. Defensive end Ronald Powell of Moreno Valley (Rancho Verde), Calif., lined up as an eligible receiver for a TD reception in the first quarter and returned a blocked extra-point kick 97 yards for two points.

"I came in at tight end twice in practice this week and it was all down blocking," Powell said. "But they called the play and I knew the route, and I told my quarterback I would be open in the end zone if he gave me the opportunity."

Cole Marcoux, a New York City product who?s headed to Dartmouth, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes for the East to spark a rally after the West had built a 21-0 lead.
