Trail Mix
Chihuahua Gulch: Alternate trail leaves Peru Creek crowds behind
One of the most popular, and often crowded, novice ski tours is the one that heads up Peru Creek, near the town of Montezuma. The tour provides relatively easy access to some spectacular scenery.

Gearing Up
Latter-day lather:
Whether you travel with a rechargeable electric shaver or a blade, take along a ShaveMate as a back-up. The all-in-one razor has a generous supply of pump-release shaving cream in the handle. The newest models of the men's Titan6 and women's Diva6 styles provide cutting-edge shaves, with six blades in the pivoting head.

Gearing Up
Copper One Lodge, Copper Mountain, CO
Stay here if you: want to be right next to the lifts and have four people or fewer to stay in a one-bedroom condo with a reasonably comfy sleeper sofa.

GeoQuiz
Colorado, Utah, Delaware
Note: As usual, we start the new year with the questions given in the previous year to the students who compete in the annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Sign Spotting
Health-Conscious Fudge Factory
Possible motto: They come for the salad with tofu but they stay for the fudge.

Dolores River Hike Scenic, low-elevation route accessible much of winter
We continue our exploration of the Paradox Valley this week with a hike along the Dolores River Canyon to its confluence with La Sal Creek. The primitive trail winds its way next to the Dolores River through a Wilderness Study Area administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

The North Face of Notchtop Mountain
If you're looking for a good mountaineering challenge, this one might be for you. Long, technical and with great position, the so-called North Face of Notchtop is a classic mountaineering route. (Note: the route has been called, variously, the North Face, the North-east Face and the East Face. It really ascends an east-facing bowl below the North Face. For clarity, I'll stay with the traditional name.)

Nyswonger Mesa
We have traveled through the Paradox Valley on a number of occasions, marveling at the spectacular scenery.

Three ice climbs near Silverton: South Mineral Creek ice climbs
Ice climbers face a constant quandary. They want snow to form the ice, as it melts and then refreezes, but too much snow raises the avalanche danger. One of the areas of the state where this is particularly true is around Silverton, favored as it often is by large quantities of early- season snowfall.

The Weehawken Trail: Less-visited spot in San Juans has spectacular surroundings
Yankee Boy Basin, surrounded by the rugged peaks of Mount Sneffels, Potosi Peak, Teakettle Mountain and Gilpin Peak and home to perhaps the best wildflower display in the state, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the San Juan Mountains.

County high points becoming popular
The past few years, the pursuit of climbing county high points in each state has gained popularity. In Colorado, a good guidebook for this is "Hiking Colorado's Summits," by John Drew Mitchler and Dave Covill (Falcon Publishing).
