The Islamic university was established by the Royal Order No. 11 dated: 25/3/1381 A.H.
And in accordance with the Royal Decree No. M / 70 dated : 7/8/1395 A.H the Islamic university Of Al-Madinah Al Munawwarah  is a worldwide Islamic organization according to its goal. And it is a Saudi Arabian university according to the subordination.

The university also set its objectives which are as follows:
1 – Conveying the eternal message of Islam to the world through advocacy, education, under graduate and post graduate studies.
2 - To instill the Islamic spirit and development of the Islamic religion and deepen the Islamic practical life individually and socially, based on the sincerity of worship to God  and demilitarizing  the follow-up to the Prophet, (peace be upon Him).
3 - Preparing academic researches, translating and publishing them, as well as giving any kind of encouragement in the areas of Islamic and Arabic sciences in particular, and other field of sciences, human knowledge, needed by the whole Muslim community .
4 – Edification  the enrolled Muslim students - from different countries in the world - and the formation of scholars specializing in Islamic and Arabic sciences and scholars in religion well equipped with what will qualify them to propagate Islam, and  solving the present problems of the Muslims in their religion and their worldly affairs, according to  the guidance  of  Qur"aan and Sunnah as well as the act of the pious predecessors.
5 - Compilation of Islamic heritage and taking care of it, as well as its sustentation and publishing.
6 - Establishing the academic and cultural links with the universities and academic institutions and organizations in the world as well as strengthening it for the course of serving Islam and achievement of its objectives.
