hope phil’s going to be ok, and my thoughts go out to his boys. any news if this happened out on the ship or were they in port?

      • Andrew

It happened during Offload in Port.

      • dave starling

If your going to have a stroke, better to have in port than out to sea. God Bless Captain Phil. Get well and come back to the wheelhouse.

    • ChefRuiz

GodsSpeed to Capt.Phil. Show won’t be the same without him fighting with his son, smoking cigarettes and fighting to make his quota each season and battling hurricanes and engine problems!!

  • ks

    How sad-speedy recovery!!!!!!

  • Bobby

That is too bad,but if he’d stop smoking like a chimney and take better care of himself this probably could have been prevented.I do hope he gets better.

    • hen

That comment is just insensitive. as true as it might be, it’s still rude and this isn’t the platform to be sanctimonious and judgmental to people you’ve never met.

      • Bobby

I didn’t mean to be disrespectful at all,I watch the show and really hope he gets better.I’m just saying when are people going to realize that nothing good can ever come out of smoking,I just don’t understand why people do it.I’m sorry if I came off as insensitive, that was not my intention at all.

      • djd_201

Come on! Lay of Bobby! Everyone who watches the series knows he smokes like a steam locomotive and even his sons have hounded him to quit. He’s had problems before and had to go to the hospital because of a spell. I always like the way people completely forget of their own personality issues and inequities against others through these normal comments sections. Sanctimonious and Judgemental? Sheesh…just read your own words and tag them with your VERDICT on Bobby. Quit being so Judgemental AND Sanctimonious hen. That mirror in the bathroom isn’t to worship your own image, its to remind you of who you are if you tend to forget too often.

      • Valerie

how can the sons say anything….they smoke too. If you all are regular watchers you know Phil had a blood clot pass through his heart….he was lucky to survive that. He was told to stop smoking then. I do hope Phil recovers. He and Sid are my favs on the show. Godspeed Phil!!!

      • Bugs

I too wish Phil a speedy recovery. Sad but true. I don’t believe it is insensitive to state this fact. I’m sure his doctors have already said the same thing, and maybe not so nicely. That’s what I told my uncle and grandma when they had trouble breathing and always complained to me. I told them I didn’t want to hear it unless and until they stopped smoking. When they finally stopped they could finally breathe. I haven’t heard a word of breathing complaints for 6 years! It works!

    • koop

WOW thank you captain obvious!! I am glad you won’t be the one at the foot of my hospital bed!! I have a friend who’s 80+ year old mother would say something like this (I can’t stand her either :)

  • Dede

I wish him a full and speedy recovery. I have never seen a tougher individual in my life. He just manned-up on a pulmonary embollism. He only went to the hospital after his sons begged him after learning he was coughing up blood. He didn’t want to abandon his crew.

    • Heather

I wonder if the embollism and the stroke are related.

Safe journey, Captain Phil. My prayers are with you and your family!

      • Marcie

Yes they are both blood clots, they just landed in different locations. I would bet they started in his legs since he sits so much while he is at sea. It is a very common problem. It is the same reason they tell you to get up and move your legs on long drives or flights. Captain Phil seems like a cool guy and tough as nails. Here’s to him getting well.

      • djd_201

There are many reasons a person can have a clot, and as Marcie said, sitting alot helps antagonize the situation. In my case, unbeknownst to me if I may use fancy words here, I inherited a think blood condition due to an “active protein C resistance” in the blood work and although smoking wasn’t a cause, it still affected the system towards a clot. I take a string of medicines now just to stay ‘normal’ and not clot again, what I call my life vitamins. “Cap” Phil may have a different ’cause’ but smoking would be more related to respiratory than blood most often. He’s probably headed for a bad elderly case of emphysema if he lives long enough, but cholesterol and tryglicerides might be a major cause to his ailment also, seeing how that ‘boat food’ may not be that most healthiest diet excluding raw grease and bad food choices. I’d personally like to know more of his medical prognosis than what we are allowed to get, but then he deserves SOME privacy to his life.

      • Randolf Scott

A stroke doesn’t necessarily have to be a “clot” or embolism. Most strokes I’ve seen in my 15 yrs as an ICU nurse have been ischemic. There is no clot. The blood vessels are chocked off by cholesterol build up and blood cant pass through and the area affected may die. The other is when a vessel ruptures. Much poorer prognosis. Just my two cents. I do hope he got help in the first hour or two. I like that guy.

  • Andrew P

i really hope he gets better! such a good show, wouldn’t be the same without him.

  • Donna

Hope Captain Phil getts better. Both him and his family are in my prayers.
