Canadian Stars Usher in Winter Olympic Games

By Bryan Alexander  Posted Feb 13th 2010 12:41AM
Dealing with the tragic death of one athlete, the Vancouver Olympics managed a stunning visual and star-studded opening on Friday.

Canadians Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado led a rousing tribute to all the athletes before the ceremony turned into a technological spectacle celebrating Canada's diversity and natural beauty. More than 100 screens around the stadium projected video and images to turn the venue into a re-creation of Canada's constellations, oceans, rivers and forests, according to CNN.com.

Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, a British Columbia resident, sang as members of the Alberta Ballet danced among holographic images of the huge trees of an old growth forest.

Hours before the Winter Olympics were set to open in Vancouver, a Georgian luge competitor died after a horrific accident during training.

Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, was training at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler, B.C., when his sled veered off the Olympic track and crashed into a steel pole at 90 mph.

Why 'Jersey Shore' Should Not Head Down South

By Amber James  Posted Feb 12th 2010 09:20PM
Snooki, The Situation and the rest of the 'Jersey Shore' gang are heading to Miami for round two of their GTL (gym, tanning and laundry) sessions. Although the idea seems like a breath of fresh air, by leaving the actual Jersey Shore, MTV is taking away the local quirks that made the show outrageous. While the state of New Jersey is breathing a sigh of relief, the cast's fake tans, big hair and fist pumps probably won't bode well on South Beach, which is known for its exclusive, elite and chic night life. Moving to Miami means the show's "Guido/Guidette" allure, which made it a worldwide phenomenon, is being ripped at the seams.

Pop-Ed: Howard Stern Is the Only Choice To Replace Simon Cowell

By Jason Kaufman  Posted Feb 12th 2010 07:15PM

It has been a week dominated by the buzz of Howard Stern potentially making the jump from satellite radio to Fox to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol.' Entertainment newscasts proclaim just how much money Stern could be offered ($100 million! More!), speculation of Stern coming to 'A.I.' cast a bizarre shadow over Ellen DeGeneres' debut on the show and Stern himself has spent hours upon hours on his Sirius/XM show laughing about the opportunity and having seven months off a year to count his 'A.I.' money.

The topic has divided our readers. We asked you on Wednesday whether you approved of the potential move. 80,000 people voted and 68 percent said "thumbs down" to Stern in place of Cowell. Our Facebook fans battled back and forth: Some would never watch the show again! Some would start watching only if Stern joined. Our own Girls on Pop editors questioned the move, saying that Stern does not bring enough musical experience to the show (they also state Ellen doesn't have any either). Many of our readers in their comments have stated that Stern would bring nothing but a potty mouth and stripper skits to a popular and family-friendly franchise.

As a devoted listener of Stern's for 16 years, it's time to speak up. The hiring of Stern to replace Cowell is a game-changing, series-saving move and there is no one on the planet more qualified to take Simon's seat. Making the case after the jump >>>

'We Are the World' Remake: THE Reason to Watch the Opening Ceremonies

By Sam Brand  Posted Feb 12th 2010 05:00PM
Canadians Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan and Bryan Adams will all reportedly step onto the stage at tonight's Vancouver Winter Olympics opening ceremonies. But if you're like us, then you're not going to watch (or DVR) the celebratory puck-drop merely to catch a handful of crooning Canucks (OK, maybe if Neil Young were performing). And it's not about Lindsey Vonn sashaying down an indoor track in a sweat suit, either. Tune in tonight to see the "We Are the World" remake. It just might be worth your time...

Kevin McKidd Kisses Sandra Oh and Tells

By PopEater Staff  Posted Feb 12th 2010 04:30PM
'Grey's Anatomy' star Kevin McKidd takes a quick break from promoting his new film 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians' to tell PopEater what Sandra Oh and his real-life wife have in common when it comes to kissing, who he'd like to see with whom on 'Grey's' and how his kids react to watching him getting steamy with another woman.

"My son had a day off school, so he came into work with me... it happened to be one of these scenes where I'm kissing Sandra. It was sort of an odd moment where he sat watching," he tells us.

Tina Fey Goes Rogue in Vogue; Talks of Palin Backlash

By Dino Sossi  Posted Feb 12th 2010 02:45PM
It's Tina Fey's world and we only live in it. In a previous PopEater article, we compared the post-'Saturday Night Live' trajectories of previous stars of the show, and Fey was, for anyone who doesn't live in a cave, super-hot. She came off a career-best year in 2008: The game-changing Sarah Palin impressions on 'SNL' and writing and acting on her creation, the Emmy Award-winning '30 Rock.'

However, as anyone who follows the pop cultural firmament knows, there is one abiding rule: What goes up must come down. But Fey has defied that fundamental law of entertainment physics. '30 Rock' is still a TV juggernaut. 'Date Night' with Steve Carell is coming out in April. And perhaps most tellingly, she has the endorsement of 'Vogue' editor Anna Wintour, not known for giving out praise lightly. In the March edition of the magazine, Wintour glows about Fey in her editor's letter: "There is nothing ordinary about her brilliance, her perceptiveness, or her beauty."

In a penetrating article about her rise from Chicago 'Second City' improviser to the first female head writer in 'SNL' history, movie star and cultural icon, Vogue reveals some insights into the relentless ascent of Tina Fey.
