How about a nice romantic comedy on Valentine's Day? Carmike Cinemas (CKEC) and operates a total of about 250 movie houses in the U.S. and is a frontrunner to capitalize on the movie spending that is sure to be strong on Sunday.
The company saw a nice boost after the recent blockbuster Avatar hit the silver screen and should keep that momentum going through the coming months.

Speaking as a guy who normally eats out or watches my wife do all the cooking, I can say that nothing is more appreciated by hardworking wives and mothers than a great meal they didn't have to prepare.
That's where Whole Foods (WFMI) comes in with gourmet meats and cheeses that make simple recipes delicious -- even for inexperienced chefs.

Twitter is at a crossroads right now. What it does in the next few months will either solidify it as a long-term contributing member of the global economy ... or relegate it to a history that includes TheGlobe.com and talking sock puppets. The company posted solid growth stats in 2009, but most of the upside came in the first half of the year, leaving the company flat from the beginning of July through the end of the year.
Revenue came into the company in October through real-time search deals with Microsoft (MSFT) and Google (GOOG), but they involved multiyear deals, which means the company needs to find new ways to make money. Maybe its advertising model will be accelerated as a result. With the user trend flat, however, and the dearth of Twitter use occurring on the website, there are flaws in the advertising model ... unless there's another way to look at the market.

A simple card can say so much, and that makes American Greetings (AM) a great choice for investors this Valentine's Day. But don't think this card is a seasonal wonder.
American Greetings has posted dramatic earnings performances lately, including earnings surprises of more than 550% and 245% in the past three quarters. This stock is a great investment for February and beyond.

The art market spent a year and a half circling the drain. Signs of life at the end of 2009, however, have become a reality, with recent auctions at Sotheby's (BID) and Christie's (CRUPF) exceeding expectations and showing triple-digit growth from comparable auctions last year.
Overall, art prices last year were off around 50%, with the contemporary art sector suffering even more severe declines of up to 70%. With prices this low and a recovery taking shape, it's time for investors to get in, and it looks like we'll see an art rally this year.

How about a romantic weekend getaway? Priceline.com (PCLN), one of my Top Stocks for February, has got lovebirds covered whether they're flying south for a warm vacation or just finding a first-class hotel with a spa for some time alone. Priceline.com allows buyers to name their own price for everything from airline tickets to rental cars to cruises.
You may not think that travel spending is very high right now, but the bottom line is that value-conscious consumers really love Priceline's ability to "haggle" on prices. This has allowed the website to become an oasis for cash-strapped consumers and generate huge numbers even during the recession.

Lingerie is another popular V-Day gift, and Limited Brands (LTD) has the inside track on these sales with its Victoria's Secret stores.
Limited's same-store sales were up 6% in January, thanks to a 17% increase at Victoria's Secret outlets. That's a trend you can take to the bank in February and beyond.

I'm going to take a brief look at two quarterly reports from the past week. We've got a popular restaurant chain on the menu, as well as a DVD-rental business that is causing Hollywood a lot of headaches.
The Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) reported flat sales revenue in the fourth quarter. And when I say flat, I mean it: $400.6 million versus $400.4 million. On an adjusted basis, net income was 28 cents per share, representing an increase of 87%. This was four pennies ahead of estimates.

Inflation. The Federal Reserve Chief and the governors believe it to be the worst of all possible scourges for the U.S. economy. The specter of it looms large as the government throws more and more money at problems like unemployment, mortgages, and bank bailouts. It would seem inflation is inevitable as that money sloshes around in the economy, driving up prices for fewer goods as manufacturers slow or stop production due to lack of demand. So what's an investor to do?

It appears Senate Democrats have wised-up and adjusted their expectations to the reality of Senate, where the "Party of No," the Republicans, wields nearly equal power.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nevada) dispensed with elaborate jobs bill negotiations and trimmed the jobs package to four items for which he knows he can get at least a filibuster-preventing 60 votes: a hiring tax break, an increase in highway spending, an extension of the Build America Bonds program, and tax breaks for small businesses, Bloomberg News reported Friday.

Valentine's Day may be a commercialized holiday to some, but there's no denying that its big business. And this coming Valentine's Day may be extra sweet since it falls on a Sunday, making it a great excuse for a romantic night out. In fact, total Valentine's Day spending is expected to reach $17.6 billion this year, up 3.3% over 2009, according to consumer spending researchers at IBISWorld.
That's a big payday, and one that investors should be paying attention to.
