Matt Groening's getting around these days. Last month he spoke with TV Squad's Joel Keller, and recently he met with the folks at Crave recently to talk about The Simpsons TV show and upcoming movie. A few gems from the interview:
- The movie will not be about Bart losing his virginity. Someone once asked one of the writers what the movie would be about, and he joked that this was the plot. It's not. Some folks don't seem to know a joke when it sleeps with them.
- When asked straight out whether the movie will reveal what state Springfield is in, Groening replies "Yes. We actually have a really good joke about that. Remember, I said joke.
- Thanks to all the pop culture references thrown into The Simpsons over the years, Groening's kids (and millions of others) have seen movies like Casablanca later in life and said to themselves "Oh, that's just like that Simpsons episode!"

The 'state' joke is blown in the preview... Ned Flanders takes Bart to the top of a mountain where you can see "the four states that border Springfield": Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky.
So... yeah... just needed to watch the trailer for that one.

I did see in the one preview Flanders pointing out the Bart from the top of a hill the four states that border Springfield "Ohio, Nevada, Maine (and some other state that is of course no where near the others).

That "Behind the Laughter" ep isn't really considered canon, at least considering how it turns The Simpsons clan into a real family playing themselves on a TV show. Since it was mentioned that they were a northern Kentucky family, we can presume that it was meant to apply to their "real life" origin and not the location of the "fictional" Springfield.

Why doesn't anyone mention that in the "Behind the Scenes" or whatever that episode was called, they said that the Simpsons were a Northern Kentucky family. It was the episode where they acted like the simpsons characters were actors playing their parts. Does no one remember this?

In the movie trailer, Ned Flanders says the 4 states that BORDER (not touch) Springfield are: Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky. Well we all know that's not possible (I hope)!
And there's got to be a joke in there somewhere! What can you get out of these 4 states? M O N K --
Short for MONKEES, which is what we've all been made over this Springfield deal!
OREGON is where Matt Groening is from. Springfield is an hour and half drive away and until recently Eugene/Springfield was the 2nd largest city in Oregon, currently 3rd largest.
If you have ever lived in Eugene &/or Springfield, you know and lived the references made between the Simpson's Sprinfield and Shelbyville and the real Springfield and Eugene, Oregon! Eugene, Oregon IS Shelbyville and Springfield is Springfield, OREGON!!!!
The jokes on us once again. Springfield is a fictional place in a real world! Anytown, USA!
