'Grey's' exclusive: Guest blogger Shonda Rhimes previews 'intense, game-changing' finale

Categories: Grey's Anatomy, News, Scoop

Greys-Shonda-DempseyImage Credit: Scott Garfield/ABC; Inset: Craig Sjodin/ABCHere are 18 words I never thought I’d type: Please join me in welcoming the newest addition to The Ausiello Files family, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes!

I’m sitting here doing what I always do this time of year, the finale-time of year, the time in which I’m writing and thinking and planning finales. I’m doing what every year I say I am not going do: I’m thinking about fleeing the country.

France or Italy, perhaps. Anywhere with cheese.  Mmmm, cheese…

I know I’m never going anywhere really. See, my friends at ABC/Disney have gifted me with a pink sparkly ankle cuff that suspiciously beeps whenever I try to leave the LA city limits. But a girl can dream. Fleeing the country is my go-to dream when working out the Grey’s Anatomy finale. Because finding ways not to write is what we writers do. And because you Grey’s fans, you take your finales very seriously.

And look, what is coming up is pretty intense. It’s the kind of finale that changes everything. I know people like to say that, wave the phrase “game-changer” around like a red flag in front of a bull. But dude, this year? GAME. CHANGER.

I’m not gonna tell you anything about it. Because I’m scared to. Instead, let me tell about a few things that are going to lead up to it:

* Derek and Meredith are going to have a very serious conversation that may or may not involve the word “baby.”

* Teddy is going to find herself fighting for her job.

* You’re going to see what happens when two Karevs get in the same room together.

* Callie and Arizona and Mark are going to do something dirty with pound cake. They were going to do something dirty with mini-muffins, but Broadcast Standards and Practices said no.

* Sloan Sloan comes back to have Mark’s grandchild.

* A 700-pound man comes to Seattle Grace and our residents have a hard time remembering their sensitivity training.

* Mer is gonna go a little badass and protective on Owen when it comes to Cristina.

* Derek is going to get even dreamier (okay, I only said that so Patrick Dempsey will come to my office and say, “Please stop torturing me” And while he’s in my office, he’ll have to then say, “Please stop touching my hair or I am calling security.”)

That’s it. That’s all I can tell you. Even though Michael Ausiello asked me to tell you more. I want to tell you more. But I can’t talk about the massive, game changing finale.

See, I’m on my way to the airport. There’s a sale on direct flights to Rome…

uh….. Things always seem to get worse after Shondra speaks….

    • Alia

Dude, the correct spelling of her name is RIGHT THERE IN THE ARTICLE. (Sorry. Pet peeve.)

      • jennrae

This article is about as exciting as a Tim Kring article about Heroes. I know that there are hardcore GA fans who will watch it till the end out of loyalty, and I know because of the numbers people are still watching, but is anyone still enjoying it? Really? There is so much great tv on right now–Breaking Bad, Damages, Justified, Lost; and later on True Blood, Mad Men, Dexter–that Grey’s looks incredibly dull by comparison, certainly not great. The dialogue and storylines are contrived–if it hasn’t already been done on ER (and done better, I might add), than you’ve at least seen it on Grey’s before. Goofy dialogue that might’ve once been cute in the first or second season is silly now. In a time when excellent programming is announcing their end dates, Grey’s is running itself into the ground with crazier surgeries and the ubiquitous random hookup. As long as it’s still making money, who cares if it’s actually good?
And obviously this is my opinion. I am aware those who would still call themselves a fan disagree with my opinion and nobody is forcing me to watch. I am still allowed to express my opinion. Personally, I think this new “GAME CHANGER” news likely means the “gang” is going to be playing Monopoly at lunch instead of Yahtzee, based on what Shonda said about Izzie’s brain tumor not being a brain tumor since technically she had skin cancer with mets to wherever. She leads fans around like a dog on a leash, and smugly teases them with treats without ever giving them any.

    • happy camper

lmao…regardless of how you spell it, you are so right! Anytime Shamda (as I now refer to her after that whole SHAM of a Merder wedding) will never let them be just happy. Remember the wife, lemon, wh0re, walking away, drowning, gross nurse…game changer means nothing good for Merder.

      • Rachel

okay if you don’t like the post it wedding, you clearly cannot like the show. Its not written for you.

      • Liz

Don’t want to be rude here, but you’re stupid. MANY fans didn’t like the Post-it! Heck, PD said he didn’t like the post-it, and that many fans would be pissed.
I didn’t ask for a big church wedding (though Ellen looked wonderful in that dress…), but a wedding, a real one, yes. I waited 6 years for… a post-it!
        Seriously?!

      • professor farnsworth

oh, please, if she made all those characters happy, you’d be complaining about how the show is boring and how it lost it’s edge.

      • Carrie

Though maybe in some way they’re making a statement about gay marriage: the government doesn’t have to be involved for two people who feel married in their hearts.
As Joni Mitchell said: “We don’t need no piece of paper from the county hall, keeping us tied and true”…

      • LDN

Mer/Der’s post-it wedding was awful because it gave Rhimes the possibility for Mer/Der to break up again without serious consequences. No divorce. No legality to their marriage. Hell, I didn’t care if they wed via post-it so long as they had a MARRIAGE LICENSE which I still don’t think they do. So screw the post it. Until they have joint health insurance, I’m pissed.

      • hannah

Why haven’t I heard anyone mention the most aggrevating reason why it’s incredibly stupid Mer and Der haven’t married? All this talk about civil unions and gay marriage and health care and hospital visits! Oh, but they’re tv doctors, so of course every time they get sick or have to give their father a kidney or almost drown or whatever, the other person is like an OR room away. But it’s just so aggrevating, especially singe the grey people obviously support gay people.

      • Cara

hannah, you are so right, and that’s one of the many reasons why i was (and am) annoyed about the post-it. doctors of all people should understand the importance of legal documentation regardless of sentimental feelings. i love mer/der but i’m not really a fan of the show anymore since mark and lexie split up. i kind of feel like sloan sloan made it jump the shark, along with the owen/teddy/cristina triangle. jmho.

      • B

Except – Mer and Der have been quite happy this season. *Shonda* said they were staying together, and now she’s talking possibly of babies. How do you get that they’re going to split, from that? I have loved the more mature relationship Mer/Der have now … I just want to see more of it! They are too absent from this season.

      • Meli

Hey, I didn’t like the post-it wedding (seriously? stupid!) and I am a fan. I am not liking this season. The writing just isn’t as sharp and fun as it used to be, and sorry, but McDreamy isn’t nearly as dreamy as he used to be. Grey’s is getting old, and has lost its sizzle. I’m hanging on b/c I am a die-hard fan hoping things get better.

      • Melinda

I kind of have to agree with Rachel and professor farnsworth. A post-it note wedding is part of the style of the show. I have to admit that as much as I want Meredith and Derek to live happily-ever-after, their story line has faded into the background for me this season. This isn’t totally a bad thing; after all, we’ve seen so much more deeply into the other characters. Alex has been a total revelation this season and I can’t wait to see where adding his brother to the mix takes us.

I watch Grey’s for the roller coaster ride, the dark and twisty turns, the hilarious ups, the tragic downs. Happily ever after, to me, is pretty much boring. I’m just sayin…

      • jen

as someone who has to plan a wedding that she doesn’t even want, i say more power to the post-it. i mean, they never said they wouldn’t formalize it at a courthouse eventually- just that they were tired of waiting for their schedules to free up at the same time, which has to be during court hours, which they would have to make an appointment for or wait in line. i simply don’t understand how this upsets you idiots. so what? how is it “disappointing”? you’re seriously that upset that a fictional couple denied you the chance to see a fictional wedding CEREMONY? and you care more about the ceremony than the relationship itself?

      • CK

Jen, forgetting the show for a moment and focusing on something that actually matters … sorry to read you’re planning a wedding you don’t even want.

      • Jessie

I used to be a die-hard fan, it took a long time to work up the courage and with the Thanksgiving episode I finally decided to stop watching a series I once loved. I don’t think that’s ever happened, but I came to the conclusion that she ruined each and every one of the characters for me.

  • Boquanda

    Excitement stroke.

    • kate

      Same here! Thank you Shonda!

      • Kat

Me three, can’t wait for the rest of this awesome season! Been very impressed with all of the writing and acting, Grey’s has really come back into its own.

    • Michelle

Most of what she hinted at was in the previews for next week…MerDer baby talk, Karev’s bro. I’ve learned to take this things with a grain of salt.

  • Celinda

    Mmm, Sloan and pound cake…

Definitely excited for what is coming up! :)

  • Jack

pound cake? what can you do dirty with pound cake…hmm

    • SingleMominaShoebox

Heh. Google “Alice Cooper” and “jelly doughnuts.”

      But not during a meal.

    • Zoe

maybe I’m just naturally dirty but “pound cake” actually sounds far more likely to incite broadcasters than mini-muffins…though with Arizona and Callie that could get a little…um…yeah.

      • alicia

I think it has to do with the connotation of the word “muffin” more than anything. Pound cake doesn’t have the same double entendre.

      • Kirstie

I think mini-muffins are more, ahem, how do I put this? Placeable? Pound cake is probably a safer bet. But it is primetime, afterall.

    • Karen

      Drop it on the floor…

  • Lisa

Nothing about Owen and Cristina… now that scares me a bit.

    • Zoe

Well, she did say that Mer was going to “go badass and a little protective” on Owen re: Christina so it sounds as if **something** is up with them.

      • pop

i thought mer already went protective last week. she’s gonna be more protective. that i look forward to.

  • tvsb

how come nothing on owen and cristina???

    • max

They have to be the most unattractive couple on television.

      • Melissa

Okay — I love Owen and Cristina…they are good together. You however apparently think that since they are unattractive they can’t be good together??? What the hell? I happen to think Kevin McKidd is attractive and have thought so since seeing him in the movie “Dog Soldiers.” Not all actors/actresses have to be superb looking to be great at their jobs. How superficial of you MAX!

      • jude

Cristina and Owen are great together – very sexy! But I do want to see more of Mer and Der. Their post-it wedding was perfect for them. For a relationship that is anything but conventional the post-it was perfect!

  • Steph

what’s the difference between pound cake and muffins?

    • Tom

      Size counts.

  • Nathan

This show needs to end, like 2 years ago.

    • sinicalgrl

no one is forcing you to watch much less makes comments – go away

      • alan from canada

        agreed…..go away

    • professor farnsworth

then quit watching. who’s making you?

  • EWsMom

How much did Shonda pay you to write this?
You should really mark this as “Advertisement” instead of an Ausiello report.

    • professor farnsworth

That’s what they usually are, an advertisement for a show. What’s wrong with you?

    • B

Shonda wrote it herself. That’s why it says she’s the guest blogger …

      • EWsMom

Oh, I didn’t notice that. Thanks.

  • Teri

I hope Teddy loses her job and LEAVES SGH! Pronto!

    • Roselle

Word Word Word Word Terry. I got very excited when Shonda said that Teddy will be fighting for her job. Makes me want to forgive her for the whole triangle mess.

      • Alisha

I actually like Teddy, she’s one of the grown ups… Hopefully she stays with Mark. They’re sexy together, but as sexy as Calzona
        YEAH!!! for Calzona

  • Dryden

You GA fans never quit whining. The creator just showed up to preview the end, which she’s never done before, and all you have to say is “Meep, why didn’t you spoil my favorite ship?”

    • alan from canada

the whiners aren’t fans. They’re just trolls who don’t have a life and surf comment boards to trash everyone.

      • Dryden

You’re probably right. It seems some of the shippers never have anything positive to say.

      • Melissa

I agree…I am SO tired of reading all the complaints about G.A. If you people do not like the show, no one is forcing you to watch it. Turn the darn channel…watch “C.S.I.” or “Supernatural” (which I would actually watch but instead by the season’s DVDs when they come out!) or whatever else may be on TV during that time slot. Or better yet, turn the TV off…read a book…just stop complaining. I think some of you only watch G.A. to have something to complain about. I happen to be enjoying this season…I like the change up with the new characters (I am not saying I like ALL the new characters — just that I like the change up), I LOVE that Izzy is finally gone (still torked that they killed George though), I absolutely love Arizona and Callie together, I also am enjoying watching Mark Sloan FINALLY growing up — although him and Teddy — NOOOOO! Baby Grey and him belong together! I am seriously liking this season…yes, I have my complaints but they are not enough for me to post about them EVERY single week. Yes, I would like to see more of Meredith and Derek…but Ellen went on maternity leave (thankfully for only 4 weeks!) so obviously there has been less of her this season…before she went on maternity leave they had to figure out ways to conceal her pregnancy…I think they did an excellent job at that. Most shows don’t.

Also, after seeing last night’s episode…with Sara Gilbert – come on, it was an excellent episode. I also enjoyed seeing more of Dr. Hunt’s past…but the main story was about a patient’s right to die. It was well written and I admit, I cried.

So people who only watch the show to complain — again, TURN THE CHANNEL! No one has a gun to your head, forcing you to watch the show!

      • burkeskeifer

Amen to that. And I’m one of the worst with my 10,000 aliases. 24/7 you can count on me!!!

  • Alia

There’s not a ton of news here (other than Mer/Der contemplating procreation), but the part about Dempsey’s hair was kinda cute. :-)

    • Liz

I miss his longer hair… You know, the “Russel Crowe” thing… Now it’s way too short!

      • Meghan

His hair is probably shorter cuz he is the cheif and you need to be more clean cut for that type of position.

  • Becky

Excited for the Finale and very scared too! Not comforting that there was no direct mention of Cristina and Owen! Ughhh!

    • Mary Q. Contrary

Ah, but I consider that a good thing, because it probably means the game-changing finale will be centered around them. Or at least I hope it will.

      • Shannon

I’m totally content if their relationship just goes away! He’s always been kinda creepy to me…I’ll take McDreamy or McSteamy anyday!!

  • Lori

Got a feeling the finale is going to be brilliant!

  • lisa

where is the CO goodness!!!! Step up shonda!they are all greys has left sorry!!

    • laura

I THINK EVERYONES PRETTY SICK OF C/O. ITS ALL WE EVER SEE.

      • Tamara

WORDS!! enough now with all the screentime and sex scene’s for only those two
