    How Low Can You Be?

    How Low Can You Be?
The Larionov Boots from autumn/winter 2010 have an 125 mm heel and a 15 mm platform

This question doesn’t relate to the state of your emotional wellbeing, it relates to the height of your heels. The new debate on the fashion block at the moment is about the “new” lower heel - I have even been asked about “the Celine effect”. Unaware that minimalism is apparently also meant to signify minimal heel height, I had to ask what that was...

So what is the “new” low heel? Our Asian clients have asked us to produce lower heels for their market and I feared that this would mean modest kitten heels of 40-45 mm. I still remember them from ten years ago and also I remember how often they broke, right in the middle, despite their modest height. Fear not, the lower heel is now 70-75 mm high. Whoo-hoo!

The Yummy Mummy stilettos from the new autumn/winter 2010 collection have an 110mm heel

I personally prefer higher heels to be honest, I kind of feel: A. more powerful; B. more feminine; C. my legs look better and D. I can kiss my two-metre-tall boyfriend without tiptoeing around him.

However I don’t want to look like a transvestite either and after years of dragging myself around the world in heavy platforms, my feet do feel a bit tired. So I figured out that a 110 mm heel or the same height drop (for example 125 mm heel with 15 mm platform), is what I can wear all day, from morning till late night. And this is important to me; I often go out straight after work. Anything over 110 mm and I can only do the taxi-restaurant-taxi-bedroom route; no standing, no dancing, no walking, no fun (well...maybe).

The Crusade Shoe Boots from the spring/summer 2010 collection have an 11 cm heel with a 5 mm platform and are very comfortable

The sight of drunken girls on a Friday night, walking barefoot with their heels in their hands is just too ugly to bear. If you can’t walk in them then just don’t wear them! Buy lower heels instead…

A great new book just came out: Fashion Jewellery: Catwalk and Couture, by Maia Adams. Apart from myself, it features lots of important names in fashion jewellery today - like Scott Wilson, Bless, Judy Blame and Erickson Beamon amongst others.

To celebrate its launch Maia, and Parisian store Colette where the book is sold exclusively until the end of March, have invited some of the designers to create a one-off piece inspired by an ideal client. This is what I have come up with:
