  • P-E index—Abbreviation for precipitation-effectiveness index.
  • P–E ratio—Abbreviation for precipitation–evaporation ratio.
  • p system—See pressure coordinates.
  • Pacific Deep Water—A water mass found between 1000 and 3000 m in the Pacific Ocean.
It is characterized by very sluggish flow and correspondingly low oxygen content. See deep water.
  • Pacific high—(Or Pacific anticyclone.) The nearly permanent subtropical high of the North Pacific Ocean centered, in the mean, at 30°–40°N and 140°–150°W.
On mean charts of sea level pressure, this high is a principal center of action.
  • Pacific–North American pattern—(Abbreviated PNA pattern.) A wave-train signal that spans from the equatorial Pacific through the northwest of North America to the southeastern part of North America.
This is the strongest teleconnection pattern of low-frequency variability of the atmospheric circulation in winter in response to changes in the sea surface temperature.
  • Pacific Subarctic Current—See Aleutian Current.
  • pack ice—(Also called ice pack.) All sea ice other than fast ice; thus, sea ice that is capable of substantial motion and deformation.
  • packed tower—A pollution control device for reducing (scrubbing) sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
This device consists of a column or tower that is packed with absorption material such as sodium or calcium carbonate, which removes the SO2 from the flue gas as it passes through the tower.
  • paesa—A violent north-northeast wind of Lake Garda in Italy.
