About Library 160

Library 160 is the recognized first step for ISU undergraduate students to learn library research skills and concepts in information literacy. Established in 1890 as an innovative class entitled "Library Use Instruction" for all freshmen, the program was one of the first of its kind nationwide. Library 160 has developed into a required ½ credit class for all ISU undergraduates, dating back to the 1970s.

History of Library 160: Since its beginnings, Library 160 has embraced new technologies for teaching, and has continued to adapt even today. In its earliest years, Library 160 was strictly a lecture-based class.  A printed course manual and written assignments were added to the lectures in 1947. The 1970s featured a brief experimentation with video-based instruction for delivery of the class lectures component. In the 1990s, development of online interactive tutorials began. Today, Library 160 is no longer class-based, but self-paced. Students attend one orientation lecture, then complete readings and quizzes in WebCT and obtain additional practice working with web-accessible tutorials and exercises.

Students learn through Library 160 how to access information effectively and efficiently using basic library resources such as the ISU Library Catalog and selected periodical indexes. Students also learn basic search techniques such as keyword and subject heading searches, and concepts such as Boolean operators (connecting words such as "and", "or", and "not" that can refine search results). Library 160 also includes an introduction to effective searching on the web, when to use the "free" web for information and research, and how to evaluate search results.
