Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Photo Gallery
This page was posted (in June 1999) at a time when Notes on Kite Aerial Photography had gone through a relatively quiet period. Well, with the academic year over and my early summer travels finished I resolved to get some new material posted. And what better place to start than photographs from our recent trip to the North Shore of Oahu. A few months ago I received an e-mail from Richard Sterman, a realtor in Hawaii. Richard, who manages a string of vacation rental houses on Oahu's North Shore, had found my WWW page offering to trade kite aerial photographs for slide rules. Richard allowed that he had no slide rules to barter but wondered if I would be willing to trade a week in one of his rental houses for taking aerial photographs of same. I responded that it was an interesting idea.

After a few e-mails back and forth Richard and I struck a gentleman's agreement. I would
arrive in Oahu on June 17 with three Benton assistants in tow and he would provide housing
for a week and point us toward properties to photograph. I did a little bit of preliminary
research. The North Shore of Oahu is most often associated with surfing and during the
winter has remarkable waves at famous breaks like the Bonsai Pipeline and Waimea Bay.
During the summer Oahu's waters are much calmer and there is a reliable trade wind to keep
the kites aloft. The date arrived and we left for Hawaii without a very specific idea of
what we would find other than trade winds.

After a typical travel day we found ourselves in Haleiwa around 2 pm. There the very kind
staff at Richard's office informed us that we would be in the Osser's House. Soon
thereafter we found to our delight that the house was pleasantly situated on Laniakea
Beach. It was clean and spacious with a lanai and deck overhanging the beach. The boys
quickly discovered a treehouse built halfway up an adjacent palm tree. We were quick to
hit the water and found that we shared the sand- and rock-bottomed shallows with large sea
turtles. All agreed that Richard had treated us well.

Over the next few days I will post pages with photographs
taken during the week of our trip. But first it is nice to think of how relaxing this
setting was. How pleasant the deck was in the evenings as one enjoyed a fine tropical
sunset and their favorite evening beverage. The days to come promised all manner of
interesting diversions and the prospect of getting my kite into the air after far too
little KAP work in recent months. As I sat on the deck I also offered a little toast to
Richard Sterman for having had sufficient imagination to pursue this barter, thanks
Richard.
