Refectory and Kitchens Abbey Royale
Fontevraud, France

Richard the Lionheart. (Canon 24-mm, July 2000)

Back in Richard the Lionheart's day the Royal Abbey was comprised of many buildings within a walled compound of almost 35 acres. Each building was associated with a religious order and purpose. Large Moutier was the setting for prayers  and Saint Benoit for the tending of patients. The Madeleine was a setting for work, Saint Lazare for the care of lepers and the Sisters who looked after them. Jean Saint of the Dress provided separate quarters for the men who lived at the abbey. The Madeleine and Saint Jean of the Dress were demolished around the time of the French Revolution..

On the left you can see the kitchen building just beyond the two spires of the church. On the right is an interior view of the church nave that I thought I should work in somewhere. (Canon 24-mm and Canon S100 Digital Elph, July 2000)

One of the most interesting buildings in the abbey housed the
original kitchens. At the end of the Refectory is a kitchen structure  with an octagonal plan and featuring many chimneys kitchens. Restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, it is a rare example of secular Romanesque architecture. I tried very hard to get a camera over, or even near, the kitchen structure. One the few occasions when I did get close it seemed that circumstances of wind and kite diverted my attention from photography to kite flying.

The kitchen structure is just visible on the right side of the right image and again in the lower images (Canon 24-mm, July 2000)
