Avatar sets Blu-ray sales record, sells 2.7 million in four days

Perhaps a testament to the growing demand for Blu-ray content, Blu-ray accounted for 40% of total home video sales for Avatar in the four-day window. That's a significant increase from the 25% market share The Dark Knight claimed over a year ago.
Avatar will most likely represent yet another sales benchmark when it is re-released on 3D Blu-ray next year. Thankfully, PS3-owning movie fans are already equipped with one of the few Blu-ray players on the market that will be capable of playing that disc.

Agreed, I think the movie was worth the price of admission but I don't think it was a great film by any means...
the fx were good but the story was really too simple and the dialog kinda corny.
golfs4panzys @ Apr 27th 2010 8:02PM
I agree but I imagine most people bought it because of the spectacle rather than the story.
The movie as a story was pretty generic but the graphics and everything were done extremely well. So, its to no surprise that it sold so well on bluray.

What, you didn't like Planet Nightclub? You mean the movie didn't totally and completely change everything about everything you ever thought about anything? Don't you know that only a white guy can save the day, even if he's got to dress up like the natives? You got something against the global warming preachy director that has two houses that are ten times the size of yours (and are right next to each other) and his private-jet-setting lifestyle?
Dude... get with the program.

"Planet Nightclub" - That is hilarious! Up vote for you.

So much for Bluray being a failing format.
Gimboa @ May 4th 2010 7:07AM
I downloaded an 8 gb movie with inferior sound and picture to a blu ray, on my 20 mbit cable connection (that isn't really all that reliable, ahem), and the movie was skipping quite a bit. And for my country, the USA, I'm probably in the top few percent of bandwidth homes.
That's why blu-ray is viable. I bought the PS3 because the games are awesome, but I've slowly learned to appreciate how great the movies look and sound on blu-ray (I usually just rip a DVD to H.264 and stereo).
Kids and guys are going to want 3D, gimmick or not, and they are going to get blu-ray players, probably PS3s, and they are going to keep blu-ray's momentum building. I see no reason for a newer video standard, but blu-ray has many years before most homes can download that kind of material easily.

i have to wait for a rerelease. its hard to pay 25 bucks for a bare bones offering

James Cameroon shall not receive my money or my attention.
Gimboa @ May 4th 2010 7:08AM
He really is an offensive character who thinks very little of his audience. I admit he's a master of his little weird type of money maker film, but you're not missing a damn thing if you didn't see Abyss, Avatar, and Titanic.
frank the tank @ May 4th 2010 8:53PM
guys just think of this did you at any time during the movie think wow this looks so awesome i bet you did at first and then forgot nothing but the white people where real and i just noticed i dont remember any black people
Gimboa @ May 5th 2010 1:21AM
well, most people are not black. Like 90% or so. They had that hispanic lady, and I'm sure a few tokens, but this is James Cameron. He's a nutjob and he simply cannot understand how to make a movie that doesn't follow the same little pattern where James Cameron's fantasy id teaches idiots how to survive... in other words, a white man who dodges the draft somehow teaches minorities who couldn't survive without him how to beat all those idiots who served in the military.
And he's so good at making movies, I almost don't mind. But watch his stuff... that's usually what's going on. You can see a lot about how James's mind works. How he felt about not serving and those who do serve, how he feels about non whites, etc.
jd_from_da_80s @ May 17th 2010 9:15PM
Sorry for the late reply, most of the actors that played Avatars were Black, if that counts for anything.
frank the tank @ May 17th 2010 11:46PM
yea but its like having a hot girl friend and giving her the brown bag treatment lol
