Among
the many challenges experienced by immigrants to the United States can be depression, isolation, and exclusion from a
health services network, all of which can be compounded by HIV infection. Since 1989, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation
has run El Grupo, a weekly peer support group for Latinos and Latinas living
with HIV and their families. This rich,
vibrant forum includes men and women, gay and straight, and young and old
Spanish-speaking individuals, which makes it the only ongoing support group of
its kind in San
Francisco.
Besides
providing a window into the needs of our Latino clients, the group possesses a
vitality and desire to participate in community organizing, which has led to
collaborative projects with our public policy department and the Black Brothers
Esteem program. We have found that our
culturally responsive work helps clients better adhere to medications and
improves their overall health.
All
services of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, including El Grupo, are provided
regardless of immigration status.
