The Burnett Mary Regional Group and Fauna & Flora International have established a partnership to enhance the development of conservation strategies in the Burnett Mary Region of south east Queensland, Australia. Significant support for this project has been gratefully received from the Qantas Foundation.

FFI supported BMRG in their successful UNESCO Great Sandy Biosphere nomination. Located on the eastern seaboard of Australia, the Great Sandy Biosphere is an area rich in outstanding natural landscapes, as well as high endemism and biodiversity values. The area includes natural landmarks known around the world, such as Fraser Island (UNESCO World Heritage site), the Great Sandy Strait (Ramsar site), and Hervey Bay (an important stop-over for humpback whales).

The successful nomination of the Great Sandy Biosphere provides the basis for sustainable use of the entire region based around a unique sand-based ecosystem and forest hinterland. Through engagement with BMRG, FFI will assist in the development of conservation strategies in this globally important region.

The Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management Inc. is the peak coordinating body for natural resource management in the Burnett Mary region. BMRG addresses natural resource and environmental management issues concerning water quality, salinity, coastal and marine management, biodiversity, sustainable production, community engagement and capacity building. The BMRG is entrusted by the State and Commonwealth Governments to manage significant “Caring for our Country” funds for the region and its mission is to plan, promote and invest to achieve ecological diversity, conservation and sustainable production throughout the Burnett Mary region.
