The most significant tract of Choco rainforest in Ecuador, the Awacachi corridor, was in grave danger of being converted to palm oil plantations that would have destroyed vital habitat for the Critically Endangered brown-headed monkey and many other threatened species. FFI is combating this threat by helping Ecuadorian NGO Fundación Sirua to secure a living connection between two of the most important reserves in the area. The 11,500ha that we have so far secured, are the result of 53 land purchases via FFI’s Arcadia Land Trust, and other partners. Our ongoing work is aimed at improving biodiversity monitoring and conservation enforcement though locally trained rangers selected from neighboring communities.
