2010 International Year of Biodiversity LOGO Biodiversity is life. Biodiversity is our life.New Year’s Resolutions: Five things you can do to protect biodiversity

5 things you can doHumans are part of nature’s rich diversity and have the power to protect or destroy it. Here are a few simple things you can do that make a difference. Go on – take on one (or all!) as your New Year’s resolution.

  1. Inform yourself and spread the word – learn more about the year and explore our website to find out what we’re doing to save biodiversity. Best of all, sign up to FFI’s e-newsletter to stay up to date!
  2. Source responsibly – buy products that are certified against environmental standards, such as the Forest Stewardship council (FSC) for paper and wood and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for fish and the GreenPalm ecolabel, endorsed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Their ecolabels mean that those products have been harvested in a sustainable way.
  3. Reduce your footprint – walk or cycle instead of drive, sign up to the 10:10 initiative (FFI has!), turn electronics off at the wall, and recycle as much as you can. Overconsumption is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss.
  4. Get involved!. You can fundraise for FFI by doing a sponsored run or recommending us to the company you work for. There are lots of ways you can direct money to help save biodiversity.
  5. Buy eco-friendly gifts – if your birthday or anniversary is coming up, ask for an “eco-gift” or give one to someone you know. They’re unique presents that really make a difference to our planet. Check out some FFI gifts.
