Zoos working towards conservation

Asian elephant

Zoos across Australia have offered FFI invaluable support in recent years, and with the FFI office now open in Melbourne, our relationships with these organisations are going from strength to strength.

Elephants are undoubtedly at the top of their priority list:

  • Through their Wildlife Warriors Worldwide arm, Australia Zoo is supporting FFI’s Asian elephant program. More recently the zoo also provided material support to the project teams in the form of vehicles, electric fencing, and GPS, and also set up an exchange program between the staff of two of our regional elephant programs.
  • Melbourne Zoo provides ongoing species support for elephants and landscapes in Northern Sumatra, and has provided critical support to FFI’s biological survey teams in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains.
  • Taronga Zoo sponsors a community based project to address human-elephant conflict in Cambodia through FFI’s trilateral partnership between the Government, NGOs and local community representatives.

And tigers don’t come far behind…

  • Australia Zoo is also helping to tackle the serious threats to the Sumatran tiger (there only 300-400 individuals left in the world) by supporting the work of the joint FFI and Kerinci-Seblat National Park Tiger Protection and Conservation Units. These Units defend a significant population of Sumatran tigers by leading law enforcement patrols in vital tiger habitat, which have so far led to over 20 successful arrests of tiger poachers.
