Faris Badwan

Frontman of THE HORRORS Faris Badwan will be showcasing his artwork in an exhibition in London next month. The exhibition is entitled 'Drawing A Straight Number Nine' and will be on display at the Book Club venue featuring a hundred new pieces of art - drawings, projections, and other pieces of artwork - from August 11th to the 29th for public viewing.

Badwan told NME magazine that: "What I wanted to get across with this exhibition was how much of a part of my life drawing always has been. It invades all of my daily routine, be it in the shredded form of masking tape stuck to my walls, line-drawings on restaurant napkins or the sketchbooks I carry with me. It really is the one constant, solid thing in my life – a stream which runs regardless of what I happen to be doing or where."

Read our January 2010 interview with The Horrors HERE - which also features the drawing talents of Badwan himself, as well as each of his band-mates!

For all 'Horrors fans who unfortunately do not live in the band's homeland, have a gander instead at some pages from Badwan's many sketchbooks, thanks to Vice magazine...

The Monster Engine - Dave Devries

Dave Devries is the genius behind THE MONSTER ENGINE: "a book, a demonstration, lecture and a gallery exhibition". Devries traces children's drawings from a projection (via an opaque projector), then paints the image "realistically". Devries says that he applies a "combination of logic and instinct" when painting his 'Monster Engine transformations.

Check out some of Devries' pieces below. To view more artwork on his website - click HERE.

According to Wikipedia: a BENTO "...is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container."

An 'oekakiben' or 'picture bento', on the other hand, is a type of bento "which is decorated to look like people, animals, buildings and monuments, or items such as flowers and plants." These, my friends, are the lunch boxes of the 21st century!

SUCK on this! PDF Print E-mail

Please don't be offended. 'SUCK' is a store in the UK I've recently discovered that's filled with fun, kooky and innovative designs, that's bound to get people talking. Aside from their flagship store, their products are also stocked in shops and departments stores all over the world.

So when I walked into one of my favourite places yesterday, I couldn't help but purchase this Origami Sticky Note Pad! It's so cute! Essentially a pad of Post-Its but what makes this stand out is that on each individual Post-it are instructions on how to make an origami cat; swan; snake; pigeon; cup; hat; piano; boat; penguin and a pelican.

SAMARA and her ANIMAL drawings - guest blog PDF Print E-mail

My drawings are often inspired by personal treasures of mine.

A collection of animal hats I own, inspired me to do a series of portraits of my friends. Each friend is wearing their favourite animal on their head and each animal reflects my friend's personality and character... even if they don't like to admit it!

Below are some quotes of what my friends said about their particular animal...

Katia - Praying Mantis: "They duel wield."
Kendal - Zebra: "For an animal that looks similar to a horse it makes some messed up noises."
Ruby - Panda: "They get stoned off Bamboo and refuse to have sex."
Daisy - Wolf: "Lone Wolf."
Reuben - Owl: "Owl's are wise and so am I, being a Shaman/Guru and all."
Steff - Goldfish: "I chose the goldfish cause they remind me of myself... wait what was I talking about."
Jesse - Monkey: "Have you seen how they wash their hands."
