The annual ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL went off with a bang in Los Angeles this June. With acts such as Armin Van Helden, Moby, Basement Jaxx, Steve Aoki, Dirty South, and Swedish House Mafia - there's zero chance of fitting in any beauty sleep on any of the music festival's days. We didn't want New Zealand to miss out, so Coup De Main recruited a roving photographer! DAY ONE photos below featuring LIL JOHN, RIVERS CUOMO (of Weezer), TRAVIS BARKER (of Blink-182), STEVE AOKI, HYPHY CRUNK, A-TRAK, and INFECTED MUSHROOM...

“There may be a recession on, but that doesn't mean the people aren't dancing. This past weekend, North America's largest dance music festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, packed in more than 135,000 people over two days at the L.A. Coliseum and Expo Park, topping the producer's anticipated numbers by more than 30,000. Proving again that dance music (and massive parties) are in high demand in Los Angeles…" - Los Angeles Times

TRAIN - live at the Powerstation, 28/06/2010. PDF Print E-mail

Train

San Francisco based soft-rock band TRAIN have been kicking it in the music world since 1994, and are most known for their two biggest singles: the Grammy award-winning 'Drops of Jupiter' from 2001; and their most commercially successful single to date, 'Hey, Soul Sister' from their latest album 'Save Me San Francisco', their first release after a three year hiatus.

Playing to a relatively packed Powerstation, Train's fans certainly are patient and loyal. This was their first New Zealand performance ever - and a cold wet wintery Auckland night did not stop the 30-40 year olds from dressing up, and subsequently rocking out to Train's simplistic yet catchy soft-rock tunes... or swooning over vocalist Patrick Monahan - who to me looked like a more preppy Chris Cornell, or a well-preserved rockstar edition of a Ken Doll - who as it turns out, boasts an exceptional voice.

As the lights dimmed and the screams began, the band walked on stage accompanied by the sound of a steam train, an obvious, yet attention grabbing introduction. Automatically Monahan proved his worth, stunning those in attendance with the strength of his voice which powered above the instrumentals coming from his bandmates. Second song 'Get To Me' had Monahan amping up the crowd participation, with 'oh yeah' sing-backs causing the entire audience to pay attention and get involved. Invoking crowd participation was a strength of the band which became more evident throughout their hour and a half long set, an ability which I assume has been well mastered over their many years of practice. Going straight into single 'Meet Virginia', guitarist Jimmy Stafford finally emerged from the giant shadow cast by Monahan and stunned the audience with a long and epic guitar solo, proving the band was in fact more than a Patrick Monahan + friends type-deal.

SAOSIN and BLESSTHEFALL - live in Auckland! PDF Print E-mail

Blessthefall

SAOSIN and BLESSTHEFALL share an eerily similar story. Both bands have had well-documented vocalist changes, which still plague them. Both have released only two full-length albums, both have five members, both have played both the Taste Of Chaos (U.S.) and Warped Tour music festivals - and now in recent history - both played to a packed-to capacity Ellen Melville Hall on June 9th 2010.

Local acts Broken Avenue and Snakes Of Iron opened the show, and by the time Blessthefall took to the stage, the anticipation was at an all-time high, as was the heat. Take any room with little to no ventilation and pack it to capacity... and a sweat-fest is guaranteed to ensue. That being said, any complaints about the heat were silenced when an enthusiastic Blessthefall arrived on stage, opening their frenzied set with ‘2.0’ and ‘What’s Left Of Me’ - the two opening tracks from their latest release ‘Witness'.

WE LOVE SOUNDS - enough to still be impressed! PDF Print E-mail

WE LOVE SOUNDS winter music festival, held on June 4th 2010.

We Love Sounds saw an interesting lead-up week to the show itself, facing a massive hurdle just days before the Auckland show. Promoters were on track to lose a lot of money and possibly the festival's reputation. So naturally, my curiosity for the show's outcome grew, along with a lot of expectation. Having dropped two main acts and a downgrade in venue, I wondered how the We Love Sounds ticket buyers would respond.

Due to ticket sales, the Perth tour was cancelled just days before the Auckland show. Which in return, was the cause of two main acts being dropped - Underworld & Crookers. The promoter did however, attempt to make do with what they had in Auckland, and to the attendees dismay, downgraded from The Waitakere Trust Stadium to three bars on K’ Road - the Studio, Ink and Coherent.
