G-Star

The G-Star runway moved from the Hammerstein Ballroom to Pier 94 on the Hudson River this season, but despite having more raw space in which to mount their usual over-the-top, masterfully choreographed extravaganza, it was a comparatively quiet affair. Yes, there were 60 looks, but the models just did a straightforward strut up and down the catwalk. No moving platforms, no pyrotechnics, no light show.

The clothes were easier to see, come to think of it.

Functionality was key, with several pieces of outerwear equipped with straps and cords that did this or that. One lucky model's backpack came equipped with a flask, and there was a clever denim jacket with a built-in windbreaker. Despite their somewhat subdued presentation, though, the clothes were the same saucy spin of classic American sportswear that fans expect. One white miniskirt was so mini, you could see cheeks.
