China's new online Apple Store sells out of iPhone 4s on day one

Just 24 hours into business, China's first online Apple Store has sold its entire stock of iPhone 4s. Writing for The Global Times, Wang Xinyuan says, "Apple Inc's new online Chinese-language store was a big hit with consumers Wednesday after it sold out its entire stock of iPhone 4s on the first day."

Apple hopes to tap into China's fast-growing online shopping market, which saw business of 120 billion yuan (about US$17.91 billion as of this writing) worth of transactions in the third quarter of this year.

More importantly, Apple hopes the online store will further thwart the gray market that has been a consistent problem in China. Supply shortages and the prestige of owning the device have created a large network of unauthorized resellers. Recently, Apple Store security was required to temporarily close a Beijing Apple Store and adopt a one-per-customer policy when customers began to purchase iPhones in bulk and re-sell them right outside of the store.

As for the online store, The Global Times reports that its stock will not be immediately replenished, and is encouraging customers to check back often for updates.

Apple is now the fourth-largest phone maker worldwide

Well that was fast. In just three years, Apple has become the forth-largest phone maker worldwide. According to an IDC report, Apple moved into the 4th position in the 3rd quarter of 2010, overtaking competitor Research In Motion (RIM). As of IDC's report, the top vendors are, in order:
  1. Nokia
  2. Samsung
  3. LG Electronics
  4. Apple
  5. RIM
  6. SonyEricsson
Apple's ascent has also pushed SonyEricsson and Motorola out of the top five. IDC notes that Apple's iPhone as well as Android phones from HTC and Samsung boosted overall smartphone performance in Western Europe. In the U.S., the smartphone market grew in the 3rd quarter while sales of traditional phones fell, despite attempts to add smartphone-like features.

Finally, IDC notes that Apple managed to outsell RIM by 1.7 million units, and Sony Ericsson by 3.7 million units during the 3rd quarter while releasing the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries. All of this despite the "antenna issue" that was supposed to seriously hinder performance.

Congratulations to everyone at Apple.

How the iPad is benefiting Sprint's mobile broadband sales

Sprint recently noticed an increase in sales of its Overdrive (3g/4g) MiFi wireless hotspot, and it seems the iPad is behind it all. In an interview with GigaOM, Sprint's chief executive officer, Dan Hesse, noted that most iPads sold are Wi-Fi only. Since their introduction, his company has seen an increase in sales of the Overdrive.

When asked about the iPhone, Hess refused comment, stating that Sprint policy is to refrain from commenting on its relationship with vendors. He also noted that Sprint is banking its future on great customer experience, a simple value proposition and finally the actual devices (in that order). Currently, Sprint is carrying BlackBerry and Android phones, while arch-rival Verizon is almost a lock to be selling the iPhone next year.

Meanwhile, Verizon is addressing the iPad-plus-hotspot trend directly by offering iPad/MiFi bundles in its retail stores. For those who want to support an iPad in addition to a few other devices, it's not a bad way to go.

iPad now available at Verizon, AT&T stores

Today is October 28th, and that means the iPad is now available in Verizon Wireless and AT&T retail locations. The arrangement was announced October 14th. As a refresher, here's how it works.

At Verizon stores, the iPad (all models) is sold bundled with a Verizon MiFi 2200. The access point offers a 1GB allowance in exchange for $20/month with no contract. Bundles start at $US630 for the 16GB iPad plus a MiFi and go up to $730 for the 32G model and $830 for the 64GB model. At AT&T stores, 3G models are sold with not external access device.

As the holiday shopping season officially begins, the iPad is available from seven vendors: Apple, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Best Buy, Micro Center, Target and Walmart. That distribution will get the gadget in front of a lot of potential customers. Here's to a successful shopping season.

Shipping times grow for the base model MacBook Air

The 64GB, 11.6-inch MacBook Air must be selling extremely well, as Apple has boosted shipping times from 24 hours to 1 to 3 days. Typically the least expensive version of Apple hardware has been the best seller (or among the top), so it's not surprising to see the Air selling well.

Of course, the delay could be due to supply or manufacturing issues as well. Eventually Apple might release sales numbers but until then, prepare to wait a while for your new Air to arrive.

Rumor: Apple retail app to offer "check-ins," connect employees and customers

Apple Store Lincoln Park Chicago, IL USA by Thomas M.

MacStories has heard an interesting rumor: that Apple's recent work in location-based networking and "check-in" software will be used inside of Apple's retail stores, specifically to provide better service from employees there. Not a lot is known yet (and MacStories doesn't reveal the source of the info, though presumably it comes from someone who works in or with Apple retail), but the rumor says that Apple would provide an app that's specifically designed to help coordinate the experience of visiting an Apple Store. A customer could check in and set up appointments directly from the app, get push notifications, and even see photos of employees assigned to help them. Employees could also use the app to track customers in the store and receive information about what they were there for.

It all sounds very interesting -- we know for a fact that Apple employees went through some training just recently for the upcoming holiday season, so this app could have been one of the topics discussed. Something like this would definitely streamline things at the Apple Store, and move from the very ad hoc way of splitting up customers and employees to a more directed kind of connection. We'll have to see what Apple reveals as we move closer to this year's holiday sales season.

Analyst: Apple will sell 700K MacBook Airs

DigiTimes has the details (and translation) on a Chinese-language Commercial Times report suggesting that Apple will sell 700,000 MacBook Air laptops during the upcoming quarter.

Commercial Times cites vice president of Concord Securities Research Mingchi Kuo as predicting the impressive sales numbers. Kuo believes that the MacBook Air, especially the 11.6-inch model, will make a compelling choice as a second computer for many. Kuo also believes that the appeal of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will further spur sales.

Kuo formerly worked with DigiTimes and was the one to break Apple's intentions to build an 11.6-inch laptop back in July.

AT&T activates record-setting 5.2 million iPhones this summer

AT&T set a new record by activating 5.2 million iPhones in the US over summer of 2010. That's a huge number, especially considering that it activated 3.2 million iPhones in the spring. That's a soaring leap of 62.5 percent.

In total, AT&T switched on more than 8 million "integrated devices" during that quarter, the majority of which were iPhones. The company also grew its customer base by 2.6 million, bringing the grand total of those of us enjoying its services to 92.8 million. Finally, the iPhone is being recognized for producing AT&T's best ever customer turnover rate of 1.32 percent.

Remember that "antenna issue" that was supposed to kill the iPhone 4? Yeah.

it will be interesting to see what happens to AT&T's numbers should the rumors of a Verizon phone come to fruition. Would there be a mass exodus? We can only assume that AT&T hopes the answer is no.

Report: Apple to make significant enterprise gains in 2011

Despite Apple's insistence that it is a mobile device company, it turns out that the Mac category is far from done growing. A new study from the Enterprise Desktop Alliance says that 2011 is set to be a huge year for Mac on the enterprise level, with reportedly 25 percent of all new systems in that category being Macs. That would be astonishing, and would move the Mac from the current figure of 3.3 percent of enterprise systems up to 5 percent. All of this growth, says the EDA, will primarily come from companies who have already chosen Apple's technology for their systems -- they'll just be buying more of it.

Why all the growth? Most of the respondents said that "parity in integration and management between Macs and PCs" was the biggest deal for them, and certainly Apple has moved strongly in that direction recently, with the switch to Intel chips and more compatible software than ever. Businesses also cited security as a concern, and while it's not specifically mentioned in the report, you have to believe that the huge emergence of the iPhone and the iPad in the business world has done something to drive adoption of the Mac in that environment as well.

Enterprise Mac sales are already gigantic, but according to what enterprise customers are saying, they're going to get even bigger in the next year.

iSuppli: Apple to sell 120 million iPads by 2012

Many analysts were disappointed when Apple announced 4.2 million iPads sold in Q4 during the conference call yesterday. The consensus -- or hope -- among many on Wall Street was a 5m+ iPad quarter. But if iSuppli's report today is any indication, the Wall Street boys have nothing to worry about when it comes to future iPad sales. iSuppli states that due to increasing component availability (a lack of which, they suggest, is the only thing that kept Apple from selling more iPads), Apple is set to sell a total of 13.8 million units in 2010, up from 12.9 million units.

For 2011, iSuppli has raised total iPad sales estimates from 36.5 million to 43.7 million. It gets even better for the tablet maker in 2012, when iSuppli estimates Apple will sell 63.3 million units, up from their original estimate of 50.4 million. If iSuppli's estimates are correct, that means that by the end of 2012 -- just 2 years and 9 month since the iPad went on sale -- Apple will have sold 120 million of them. Now that's a lot of iPads.

The increased forecasts are due to greater than expected interest in the iPad from business and education institutions, and also due to the fact that the iPad is now available in more retail outlets like Amazon, Verizon stores, Target, and Walmart.

iShred jumps up the charts thanks to viral video

Last Saturday, we posted this video of the band Atomic Tom singing with their iPhones on the B train over the East River. Since then, the video has gone viral, nabbing more than a million views on YouTube. But the band isn't the only group benefiting from the attention -- we heard from the developers of iShred, the guitar app seen in the video, and apparently just being seen in the video has had a huge effect for them as well. The app has jumped from #84 to #4 on the App Store music app charts, and has reached the #65 app overall.

That's quite amazing, and it shows that people are getting recommendations for their apps from all over the place, from sites like ours to just spotting apps used in other contexts. What's most surprising isn't just the US App Store growth, but the fact that iShred has seen a big jump up overseas as well -- iShred is in the top ten in over 20 countries in the world. In Japan, we're told, it's the #3 app out of all of them. That's surprising -- when the video went viral, it must have become popular internationally.

Of course, it probably doesn't hurt that the iShred folks have put the app on sale for just US$0.99 (and honestly, this post will probably give them another nice jump in the listings). But it is interesting to see the effects of such a subtle app mention when it goes out and reaches the right people.

Is Apple actually the number one computer maker in the US?

Just last week, we reported that Apple had made its way into the third spot for computer makers in the US (with an impressive 10.6 percent market share), and surely this has helped to boost Apple's stock price as of late. But how would those numbers change if the iPad were to be included as a PC?

According to Fortune, that's the question that Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore has answered. He notes that including the iPad in PC sales would easily push Apple to the number one spot with a staggering 25 percent of the market.

If we keep in mind the fact that the iPad is the fastest selling gadget of all time, the results make sense. Whitmore's argument is that if the iPad is stealing market share from netbooks, then it is logical to include it in Apple's PC sales numbers.

I agree with Whitmore's take, and I think that the iPad is truly astounding. I have no problem thinking of the iPad as a personal computer because in my own experience, the use of my MacBook has sharply declined since acquiring an iPad.

What are your thoughts, though? Do you think the iPad is just a glorified iPod touch and should not be included here? Or do you think that Apple, like HP (we assume), should be allowed to include the sale of tablets in its PC sales numbers?

Report: 278,000 iOS apps available

As Apple prepares to deliver its 4th quarter financial results, 148apps is reporting that at least 278,000 iOS apps are currently available. Specifically, there are 278,723 active apps in the US App Store (as of this writing), and just over 56,000 active publishers. For now, book apps are the most popular category (48,171 active titles) and lifestyle is the least (18,286 active titles).

Most Apple watchers expect impressive numbers from Apple this afternoon, as shares recently broke US$300, and Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities has suggested that Apple could sell as many as 45 million iPads in 2011. Considering that there are now seven retailers selling iPads in the US (Apple, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Verizon, AT&T, and Micro Center), plenty of holiday shoppers will have a chance to see one.

We'll have live coverage of the financial conference call later today at 5:00 PM ET.

River of News' real money returns

Developer Dylan Ginsburg has noticed that a lot of iPhone companies (including most of the folks I spoke with at GDC last week) don't like to talk about exactly how much money they've made on the App Store. But he has no such compunctions, so he's written up a nice post on his blog about how much his River of News RSS app for the iPad has made so far. The short answer? About $20,600 since the app was released on August 19th. The app, which peaked in the top 30 (good, but not outstanding), has sold about 9,500 copies so far, and has made about $5500 of that total in the past month, which Ginsburg says seems like a pretty standard period.

I can tell you from my own knowledge that Ginsburg could be making more -- it sounds like he hasn't even started exploring advertising or in-app purchases in his app, and I've heard from many developers that those can be very helpful in the right places. But more important, Ginsburg says the satisfaction he's getting from working on the App Store is better than any monetary gain -- he just recently stepped away from a corporate job, and plans to make a go at creating apps for a full-time living.

It's cool to hear a straight story from one developer on the App Store about just how viable creating apps is. Of course, one thing Ginsburg doesn't talk about is how much work and training went into making his app -- that $20k in sales didn't just appear out of thin air. And not all developers see even his level of modest success, since there are so many apps on the store that don't even make it into the top lists. But Ginsburg is as good an example as any of the kinds of opportunities Apple has created with its App Store platform.

iPad will hit Verizon Wireless and AT&T stores October 28

Don your tin foil hats, conspiracy theorists: Verizon stores will begin selling iPads on October 28th.

There's no CDMA iPad. Big red will be selling iPads bundled with MiFi 2200s. Starting at $US630 for the 16GB model plus a MiFi, the bundles go up to $730 for the 32G model and $830 for the 64GB model.

Here's how the data plan works for these MiFi units. Customers will get a 1GB allowance in exchange for $20/month with no contract. That's a lot better than what I'm paying for my MiFi now, and it's a lot more convenient and warranty-friendly than previous iPad/MiFi combinations.

Meanwhile, AT&T stores will also begin selling iPads on the 28th, though they'll be stocking the 3G variety and not bundling them with external hotspots.

This might not be the Apple/Verizon news you were hoping for, but it's a start. We're big MiFi fans here at TUAW, and getting a mobile hotspot that can support five devices simultaneously definitely compensates for the hassle of carrying a second gadget and charger along.
