Meet Michelle Phan, The Most Popular Woman On YouTube
The fashion industry has spent the last year obsessed with fashion bloggers. From BryanBoy to Tavi Gevinson, Fashion Toast to Sea of Shoes, plucky (and lucky) fashionistas with an internet connection have been courted and fawned upon by the high-heeled set. But even all four of those bold-faced names combined don’t have the influence and following of a makeup artist named Michelle Phan, who as of yesterday became the first female to hit 1 million subscribers on YouTube.
Earlier this year, Lancome hired Phan to be their video makeup artist, and we can only hope she got herself an amazing contract — because with fans like hers, she has some serious pull. Phan once posted a story of ours on Facebook, and we saw the after-effect for days. Personally, we’ve been fans of hers since we stumbled upon her handy “How To Make Your Lipgloss Last” tutorial in November of 2009. And that’s the best part — Phan’s videos are a mix of the crazy and the incredibly servicey. Her video on how to recreate Lady Gaga’s Poker Face look has been watched over 22 million times.
To that end, we’ve posted five of our favorite Phan videos, as well as her 1 Millionth subscriber video — in which she does a lot more than makeup.
While Phan’s Poker Face video is her most popular, we have a special soft spot for her Bad Romance tutorial — just watch out for those contact lenses. They can be dangerous!
