Can MTV Return to the Glory Days of Music Videos?

By Jett Wells  Posted Nov 7th 2010 02:30PM
Can MTV Return to the Glory Days of Music Videos?Pop-Ed: When people talk MTV, they make it sound like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tale. Jekyll was the 1980s-to-late-1990s MTV, when it was still called "music television" and was about one thing only -- music. The impact it had on musicians' careers was revolutionary, and it made artists like Michael Jackson transform from pop star to legend.

Mr. Hyde is what you see today, a network without an identity and invested more in teenage humor, publicity stunts and 'Jersey Shore.' If you grew up watching MTV in the '90s, you probably don't watch MTV today because music videos and 'TRL' ('Total Request Live,' yeah, the days of Carson Daly) have been replaced by pregnant teenagers and indie redheads from Texas.

Now MTV wants us to believe that's all changing, that they can move back to the glory days of music videos. Read on.

Gwyneth Paltrow an 'Honest' Singer, Says 'Country Strong' Co-Star Tim McGraw

By Christine Fenno  Posted Nov 7th 2010 01:08PM
Country superstar Tim McGraw knows a thing or two about music -- and about acting opposite formidable leading ladies (McGraw played Sandra Bullock's husband in 2009's 'Blind Side,' the drama that won her an Academy Award).

McGraw, 43, spoke to OK! this week about his December film 'Country Strong,' in which Gwyneth Paltrow plays a washed-up recording star launching a comeback with help from her husband (McGraw) and a talented upstart (Garret Hedlund).

"The biggest challenge was to be on the screen with Gwyneth," McGraw said of his onscreen wife. "You just want to play to the level [of] the person you're playing against. It certainly made me a better actor, being there with her. Everybody around her rises when she's in a scene."

The Grammy winner (married since 1996 to powerhouse country singer Faith Hill) also reviewed Paltrow's vocals: "She's a great country singer, because when it came out, it was pure honesty. You know, the thing about country music, it's such an honest [type of] music."

Case of the Ex: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in Celebrity Cheating

By Sarah Crow  Posted Nov 7th 2010 01:00PM
Case of the Ex: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in Celebrity CheatingIt's a story as old as time: boy meets girl, they fall in love, and somebody cheats. Although the formula is pretty standard, when one (or both) of the people involved are Hollywood celebs, it may not be as simple as splitting up your stuff. While some famous couples handle their breakups behind closed doors, others choose to take a less discrete route, airing their dirty laundry in front of millions.

Although it may be cathartic to open up about those who have hurt us, if done improperly, it can can come off as tacky and mean-spirited. Here are our votes for the celebrities who have done the best and worst jobs at staying civil after their split.

Michael Lohan Reacts to 'Sick' Arrest Warrant

By PopEater Staff  Posted Nov 7th 2010 12:08PM
After news broke late this week that an arrest warrant was out for Lindsay Lohan's father -- who allegedly owes money in a Montana paternity suit -- Michael Lohan turned to PopEater's Naughty but Nice columnist Rob Shuter to respond:

"That's a woman in Montana [who] had a hearing againt me, claiming that she has my kid," explains Lohan. "I was on parole, and was not allowed to leave New York. So the judge in Motana held me in default, and ordered me to pay child support."

Lohan adds, "I asked for three patermity tests, and even Maury Povich asked her to do one with me, but she refused all three. I went to court in New York, and they basically extorted me: Pay and admit you are in default, or go to jail. The magistrate said even if I have a hearing, she will rule against me. How illegal is that."

"Anyway, I paid the first month," he continues, "and the second I was late on, because of election day [Nov. 2]. But I did send it, and I have receipts. So because I was a couple of days late, they issued a warrant. How sick."

Randy Quaid Losing Buckets of Money Hiding From 'Star Whackers' in Canada

By Christine Fenno  Posted Nov 7th 2010 10:52AM
Staying put in Vancouver, Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have forfeited $500,000 in bail -- each -- by skipping their court date in California this week. They were due for a hearing in a vandalism case in which they're also accused of squatting on a Santa Barbara property they used to own.

Meanwhile, in his first TV interview, Friday on CBS' 'Early Show,' Quaid (appearing via satellite from Canada) said certain enemies in Hollywood are the real threat to his finances.

And he believes the deaths of "friends who have died mysteriously," like Heath Ledger and David Carradine, prove that "star whackers" are intent on targeting celebrities for embezzlement, and worse. Quaid claims he's been "racketeered on" by shady associates who have pilfered his earnings.

But 'Early Show' co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez pressed the actor to explain: Why did he and Evi fail to appear in court on Nov. 2 to hear charges in their California case? Quaid essentially denied that he was required to appear, and said his wife wouldn't go alone and leave him north of the border ("we're a very close couple").

Santa Barbara Deputy District Attorney Anthony Davis, however, says he saw the CBS interview. He has just told RadarOnline "there was actually nothing precluding Mr. Quaid from attending court...that was his choice," adding that the judge has ordered the Quaids back in court to continue the case on Nov. 16.

The 'Dancing with the Stars' veteran -- who partnered with Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino this season, but recently got eliminated -- was celebrating the fifth anniversary of Tao Las Vegas on Saturday when she went public with the news, according to People.com.
