Birds

When I was a kid, we had one of those signs hanging up that said, "Be like a duck: calm on the surface, but always paddling like crazy underneath." I understand the sentiment, but c'mon. Not all ducks have the same personality. Sure, some of the more neurotic ones might "paddle like crazy" around the pond, but then there are ducks like this wee fella, who swam all the way here from Daily Squee with a technique that's easy like yesterday morning. "You don't always have to fight the current," the duckling tells Paw Nation. "Sometimes you need to just go with the flow and see where life takes you. That's what keeps a smile on my bill."

If we were to tell you that we have a video of somebody kissing a plastic version of themselves, that would likely send you running for the hills, and rightly so. That's just wrong. Right?

Well, not so fast, reader. Here's a pretty birdie who's found a harder, plastic, more colorful version of himself, and he's in love. Is this a case of mistaken identity or narcissism at its cutest? You be the judge.

Someone is definitely trespassing here, but we don't want to make any judgments.

Leave it to weird Japanese television to give us this funny video featuring an owl who transforms itself several different ways to ward off trouble. Faced with a sworn enemy, this barn owl puffs itself up to look enormous and threatening. But when a significantly larger owl comes its way, our Transformer Owl pulls a very different card, instead "elongating its body, flattening its feathers and squinting its eyes" in an effort to camouflage itself. And then there is his Count Dracula persona. You'll just have to see that for yourself.

Missing Hawk Returns to Cincinnati ZooConnie Lemperle

Trainers are celebrating the safe return of "Tex," the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden's 9-year-old Harris Hawk, who is back at home after an exhausting eight-day search that ended Tuesday morning.

Tex was making an appearance in the zoo's Wings of Wonder Bird Show when he suddenly decided to fly the coop mid-performance on August 10. According to the Cincinnati Zoo, the response from the public wanting to help find Tex was tremendous. Hundreds of calls flooded the zoo's hotline and one of these would eventually bring Tex home.

That fateful call came in early Tuesday morning, when an area resident gave a description that matched the missing hawk. In a matter of minutes, the zoo's head bird trainer, Gary Denzler, was on the scene and was able to confirm that the bird was in fact Tex.

According to the zoo's press department, "Denzler walked up and down the street with a whistle in his mouth and Tex's favorite snack (mice) in one hand for five minutes. "Once Tex spotted the food, he flew down from a tree and landed on Denzler's arm."

Denzler is reportedly overjoyed to have his feathered friend back in the safe confines of the zoo, and credits the public for Tex's safe return, "We are so grateful to the people that called in and reached out to help us during our search. We could not have brought Tex home without the community involvement."

So what about Tex's career in the entertainment biz? According to the zoo's press release, Tex will be taking a break from the Wings of Wonder Bird Show for the rest of the summer. Trainers hope that he will be able to return to the show next summer.
