Gruber just got the fakest phone ever: a white iPhone 4 toy

John Gruber, who writes the popular Daring Fireball blog just sent out a Tweet saying "Look what a little birdie sent me" and then linked to an image of a boy (I'm assuming his son), playing with a white iPhone 4.
I've been reading Gruber's blog for some time and he isn't the kind of guy who seems to play practical jokes. So there's two options here: either someone just gave Gruber a white iPhone 4, or someone gave Gruber a picture of a boy playing with a white iPhone 4.
The only question is, how did either of them get it? You can see the full picture here.
Update: Gruber just Tweeted this: "Just to be clear: it's some kind of toy. The display is paper (under glossy plastic). Bizarre!" Lame, John.

1. It's his 5 year old son, Jonas (who has long hair).
2. It's a fake plastic thing "Just to be clear: it's some kind of toy. The display is paper (under glossy plastic). Bizarre!"

Gruber has a boy, not a daughter.

Yes, we know, but Gruber isn't the kind of guy to bother with such a mod for no reason.

To make it clear, white iphones exist, they are finished not by apple, I mean iphone is really inside but the covers are changed to white.

You didn't make it clear at all.
Some Apple employees have white IPhones, as do some celeb fans

Because the horribly blurry "screen" wasn't a tip-off that it was fake.

Saw a guy in an Apple store a couple of weeks ago who had a functioning white iPhone 4. He said he built it himself using replacement parts.

I realize that every blog, including TUAW, uses flashy titles to act as link bait for readers, but honestly, is it really appropriate to use the blog as sort of a personal bash on someone? The original title of this post was "Gruber just got the rarest phone ever: A white iPhone 4."
Really? Who falls for something like that? Someone posts a picture on Twitter and suddenly its true? I realize Gruber isn't your typical John Doe with $8 a month in his pocket and calls himself a blogger. He has tons of readers and tons of sources, so he does have some sort of responsibility when he says something. But honestly, you didn't think to asking the question before blasting it on the homepage here like it were some Facebook rant? Maybe an inquisitive "Is that a white iPhone 4 in the wild?" would have been better. At least then you wouldn't have to try to cover up the fact that you fell for a joke. =/

OMG OUTRAGE OUTRAGE OUTRAGE
This post might have benefited from 10 minutes more in the oven -- and then a flip, with 3 minutes more for crispiness.

"Gruber just Tweeted this: "Just to be clear: it's some kind of toy. The display is paper (under glossy plastic). Bizarre!" Lame, John."
John was lame? I hardly think it's right to call him lame because you jumped without even waiting for him to finish the series of tweets. I mean if he posted an actual article at Daring Fireball saying he received a functioning white iPhone that's one thing, but posting just from one intentionally ambiguous tweet? Come on.
And you can't even get the gender of his child right? It doesn't take much sleuthing to know he has a son who looks exactly like the child in the photo.
Please try a little harder.

Looks like some of the mockups that Japanese cell phone stores keep around when they don't have enough actual demo models.

These are mockups. You can find them everywhere in Asia. Shops selling iPhone cases typically use them to let customers try on the cases instead of using the customers' own iPhones. There are also iPad mockups, used for the same purpose.

It's a dummy iPhone for taking photos of cases and accessories, ebay is full of them...

White iPhone 4 can be had by anyone. Whether you want a fake (iphonedummy.net) or a working one (milliamp.com/color-change-iphone-4.html).
