While the paid version of
Words With Friends HD has been enjoyed by iPad owners who are willing to spend US$2.99 for quite some time, those of you looking for the free version are now in luck.
Touch Arcade says that, just like its iPhone cousin, this version (released by
Newtoy) is supported by in-game advertising, and does almost everything that the paid version is able to do; it even has the ability to play up to 20 simultaneous games.
Since this game seems to take up a good chunk of my day, being able to get it for free is just an added bonus for an already great game. And really, who minds the little ads when the app is free? With more than two million daily users, I am guessing that not too many people do.

Unfortunately, the free HD version doesn't rotate, even 180°. And the letter pool is pretty small - difficult to remove from the rack accurately.
I'm afraid that the iphone/ipod touch version, zoomed in is easier to use on the iPad than the free HD version is.

I have to agree. I was delighted that they released an free HD version, but the blown-up iPhone app feels a lot better.

The paid HD version doesn't rotate either so your not loosing any capability by going with the free version.
I just wish I could get my money back now that a free version is available, I find it pretty suspicious that it took this long to make a free version of the app.

Should have always been universal app for paid users... the free versions are fine to have separate; but if I pay for an iPhone app, I want it to be a universal ipad app too.

If only developers would realize the true value of a universal app. When looking through the app store, when I see that "+" sign, I immediately have a great amount of respect for the dev. I am much more likely to buy any random universal app than a device specific app. Than again, if they can get away with charging $5 for the iPhone version and $10 for the iPad, it's hard to see past the profit.

The free version's advertising is really intolerable. The little bit at the bottom is ok, but every time you submit a word, instead of the rush of seeing how many points you just scored, a new screen pops up with an advertisement that makes you sit for a few seconds before you can press OK. I say $2.99 is a fair price to have an ad free app. I think that people are being petty to refuse to pay less than the cost of a pint of beer for a fun application that they use every day.

I tried the free version and was disappointed that you cannot shuffle your tiles or place them on the board to try different plays when it's not your turn. You can do this in the iPhone version. The HD version does not allow for shuffling tiles by shaking either. I thought this might be a limitation of the free version so I bought the paid app. It's no different with regard to the shuffling or tile placement to practice plays. Stick with the iPhone version.
