Move over Avatar, 3D isn’t just for PG movies any longer. And what could be a better subject for a risqué three-dimensional project than naked breasts? For model-turned-photographer Henry Hargreaves, not much. The many new owners of his book, 3DD: A 3-D Celebration of Breasts, agree.

“I was like, what is 3-D? It’s fun, it’s kitsch, it’s playful, it doesn’t take itself seriously,” said Hargreaves. “What works in 3-D? And what’s one of my all time favorite things in the world? Boobs. Lets just have a meeting of all these things.”

On Nov. 5 New Yorkers partied at Bookmarc, the newest addition to Marc Jacobs’ collection of stores in the West Village, to honor the innovative photo publication. 3DD now shares shelves with other sassy products such as the Butt Book and blank journals with reworked novel titles like The Gay Gatsby and Moby’s Dick (LOL).

“It fits in with their aesthetic,” said Hargreaves.

His collection of black and white photographs feature attractive women (half his friends, half models) in suggestive poses, with their faces covered, wearing nothing on top. The content is shamelessly in your face, especially once you put on the 3-D aviator glasses. The collection teeters on pornographic, but has been widely considered a tribute to the female form.

Hargreaves said it was refreshing to see women be so proud of their breasts. “I found a lot of my friends that wanted to be in it were like, ‘we are really proud of our boobs, we would love them to be photographed while we’re young and they look good,’” he said.

One of his subjects was so enthusiastic about the project that when she learned of it, she and Hargreaves took a few extra minutes between courses at a dinner party to do a shoot in the tub. Ms. Bubble Bath’s pictures turned out surprisingly well considering there was another kind of bubbly involved.

“It’s just unashamedly good fun!” said Hargreaves.

A celebration of femininity? Perhaps. Good fun? For sure.

Titillated? You can meet Hargreaves at the 3DD book signing at the new Bookmarc in L.A. on Thursday, Nov. 18. Or sign up for 3DD/Day to receive free outtakes from the shoots sent straight to your inbox.
