Fighter vs. Writer: UFC 123 Picks With 'Mr. International'

By Ben FowlkesPosted: 11/20/2010 02:58 PM ET

When last we left the Fighter vs. Writer series, Gerald Harris came out looking like an absolute genius when he refused to pick a winner in the Jorge Rivera-Alessio Sakara fight. At the time it seemed like a tactical error, but then the fight was called off, Harris got the point and the victory, and I became very sad.

This week I match wits with Shonie Carter, a longtime MMA veteran who recently announced he was hanging up the gloves (more on that soon). "Mr. International" has forgotten more about the fight game than most people will ever know, but can he predict the future?

Find out below, as Shonie and I go head-to-head with our UFC 123 picks.

UFC 123 Co-Main Event Breakdown: Hughes vs. Penn III

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 11/20/2010 10:21 AM ET

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- In an attempt to predict the winner of the BJ Penn-Matt Hughes trilogy finale, there's two ways to look at history. You could either examine their previous fights against each other, and how that could affect a third bout since the two are such familiar foes, or you could choose to examine their most recent bouts against their latest opponents. Whichever you felt was more valuable would help you decide which man was more likely to win.

Of course, neither outlook is likely to give you a crystal clear picture of how the fight will actually go. If you went on previous history before their first encounter, Hughes' 13-match win streak made him a significant favorite over a fighter who was moving up to welterweight for the first time. Of course, he lost. If you went on previous history before their second bout, surely it would stand to reason that since Penn beat him once, he would beat him again. Of course, he lost.

Star Watch Officially Begins for Phil Davis at UFC 123

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 11/20/2010 09:28 AM ET

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- It doesn't take much more than a cursory look at Phil Davis to realize he's a physical specimen. He has thick, powerful legs, broad shoulders and barely an ounce of fat on his 6-foot-2 frame.

The deeper you look, you realize the gifts are more than simply what's at surface level. He is bright, well-spoken, and a realist. He seeks out the best training in all the various parts of MMA, is willing to work his way up from the bottom and puts in his time at the gym. The former NCAA wrestling champion has long been on the radar of MMA insiders, but three fights into his UFC career, fans have been slow to warm to Davis, likely because none of his previous fights has been on a main card.

That changes at UFC 123, when Davis makes his main card debut in a bout with Tim Boetsch. With a win, the Phil Davis hype train may well begin to fuel up and fill up.

Eye Poke Steals the Show at Strikeforce Challengers

By Michael David SmithPosted: 11/20/2010 12:50 AM ET

StrikeforceJustin Wilcox, Ovince St. Preux and Liz Carmouche all had the biggest wins of their MMA careers at Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers event on Showtime. So it's a shame that an accidental eye poke ending a fight in just six seconds is what everyone will be talking about.

But that's exactly what happened on Friday night:
The fight between Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf was over as soon as it started when Zaromskis charged across the cage at the opening bell, went for a flying knee and accidentally poked Spiritwolf in the eye, causing an injury that led the ringside doctor to call off the fight. The official ending was a no contest, six seconds into the first round, in one of the fastest, strangest endings to a fight in MMA history.

UFC 123 Weigh-In Results

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 11/19/2010 04:05 PM ET

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- All 22 fighters competing at UFC 123 easily made weight on Friday afternoon, leaving no issues and paving the way for the event at The Palace at Auburn Hills on Saturday night.

Only one fighter needed the extra one-pound allowance accorded to non-title fights, and the rest of the athletes came in at or below the weight limits, making the weigh-ins a quick and somewhat uneventful formality on the way to fight night.

Ironically, the main event fight pitting Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against Lyoto Machida is the only one that resulted in some tension on the stage. After the two weighed in, they squared off for a posedown, and Machida put his right fist up to Jackson's face. Jackson took exception and said something to Machida, but UFC president Dana White quickly stepped between them and the situation was quickly diffused.

Controversy Looms Between Lauzon, Sotiropoulos Over Disputed Fight Gear

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 11/19/2010 03:30 PM ET

DETROIT -- On at least one thing, UFC 123 foes Joe Lauzon and George Sotiropoulos agree: their respect for each other as worthy adversaries.

On another subject, their views couldn't be more different. Lauzon takes issue with Sotiropoulos' fight gear, which features fight shorts, compression shorts, knee sleeves and ankle sleeves, leaving little of his legs exposed.

Lauzon effectively feels that Sotiropoulos is flouting a loophole in the rules prohibiting grappling pants; Sotiropoulos says he's doing nothing wrong and that many others have used the same equipment before him.
