Cataclysm Beta: Updates to archaeology and inscription
It's not on the beta servers yet -- which means the facts are still sketchy -- but there's information from a new beta (build 12857) up on MMO-Champion that includes a number of new items for archaeology and inscription. Archaeology item descriptions offer intriguing hints of things that may be, without any solid details on the items. Some examples:
- Bone Gaming Dice Dwarves love gold and dwarves love drinking, so gaming seemed like a natural fit for both. These dice appear to have been carved from sheep bones. What might be dried blood is still visible on the 5 pip.
- Cloak Clasp with Antlers This clasp is fashioned of lacquered wood carved to resemble stag antlers. On the reverse is engraved the name "Pyramond" in Darnassian.
- Fossilized Hatchling When you finished assembling this tiny skeleton through some eldritch magic, the little critter sprang back to life. He's a pretty good pet. Since he's a skeleton he doesn't eat much.
- Wooden Whistle A small whistle carved from oak. It might have been used to summon a pet or mount or possibly used as a child's toy. It appears to have been chewed on by an animal or young dwarf.
- Cataclysm Reclamation: Blacksmithing Allows you to rewrite blacksmithing plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
- Cataclysm Reclamation: Enchanting Allows you to rewrite blacksmithing plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
- Cataclysm Reclamation: Jewelcrafting Allows you to rewrite jewelcrafting plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
- Cataclysm Reclamation: Leatherworking Allows you to rewrite leatherworking plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
- Cataclysm Reclamation: Tailoring Allows you to rewrite tailoring plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
- Felfire Inscription Permanently adds 130 Intellect and 25 haste rating to shoulder armor. Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
- Inscription of the Earth Prince Permanently adds 195 Stamina and 25 dodge rating to shoulder armor. Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
- Lionsmane Inscription Permanently adds 130 Strength and 25 critical strike rating to shoulder armor. Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
- Swiftsteel Inscription Permanently adds 130 Agility and 25 mastery rating to shoulder armor. Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.

I am so excited about archaeology! I think it could be really cool and fun. I think it would be cool to give it some basic lore - reconstructing stories that happened in the past, etc. I love secondary professions!

I love hanging out in the old zones. Anything that can give me a reason to hang out in the HInterlands or the Barrens (seriously! The Barrens is one of my favorite zones, once you have a 100% mount...) is terrific.
Archeology: thumbs up!

@Dpoyesac
I don't want to spoil anything for you but the barrens will be a little different. I am very curious to see what can be dug up with archeology. Heck I can see my first days spent in Cata just mining and digging (ok there has to be some drinking involved and maybe a gank or 2). Those master inscription enchants :)

I know just what you mean! This article literally made me squeal. :x I am over the moon about Archaeology and all the goodness that's going to come with it. I love secondary professions, also! I think they're just so much fun and this one feels like it's going to be much more in depth than cooking, fishing, and first aid. ^_^

Guess I'd better level that inscriber after all. Okey-dokey then...

"Peruse the experiences of a rugged adventurer. If you still have things to learn (below level 85), you're likely to receive a substantial benefit. (4 Hr Cooldown)"
Make XP boosts? yes please.

Enchanting should read "rewrite Enchanting plans", not Blacksmithing plans. :)

They're killing one aspect of inscription by making glyphs a buy-once & know permanently item.
On the other hand, this "research" has a chance* to produce JC, tailoring, BS, LW, and Enchanting patterns. Alchemy is not included, probably because alchemy research will still result in learning potions/elixirs/flasks.
* given that one of the reagents - burned recipe fragment - is a random drop, the "chance" may be 100% since the access to these patterns will be limited by Blizz adjusting the drop rate of those fragments.
Get friendly with a scribe if you want to get maxed patterns for your professions.
The "burned recipe fragments" are probably drops from mobs (like inscription books are now). Stating the obvious here: fragments will probably sell for a lot of gold early on and scrolls for sought-after patterns are going to go for a lot of gold early in the xpac as well, but likely will retain value throughout as people level their worgen/goblin professions or change profs. (stepping on the gold-capped guy's toes here :D )

That's what it looks like to me. Trading one money maker for another.
I would compare the drop rate of the burned pieces to tailoring. It seems like something that would drop for an inscriber on a fairly regular basis.
I expect Inscription and Alchemy are off the list because they learn randomly from research. The others are learned from recipes that are bought/dropped. I just hope I can make more than one a day.

Hrm - recipe creation for inscription... was wondering what sort of money making tools would be given to scribes now that that glyph market is effectively being 95% removed.... Which reminds me to start collecting glyphs for my toons before cata hits, where their price will jump 500% to leverage the short term market....

"Cataclysm Reclamation: Enchanting Allows you to rewrite blacksmithing plans from once-lost recipe fragments."
I hope that is a typo.

People laughed at me and called me daft when I took up the professions blacksmithing and enchanting. Who's laughing now?!?!

MY DK loves the Earthen Prince Inscription. Yes he does

That image reminds me of the old Dos game Magic Carpet

I am wondering if the Inscription created recipes for other professions are new recipes added in Cataclysm, or old recipes that drop from old instances/factions that people don't want to grind anymore (AQ, Timbermaw).

"It appears to have been chewed on by an animal or young dwarf."
Lines like these make me think Archaeology is very likely going to be the funniest part of all of wow.

Jade Asp with Ruby Eyes - This tiny figurine could possibly be a representation of High Priest Venoxis, though snakes of all types are venerated throughout troll culture. The delicate jaws on this figurine can be closed, presumably to draw blood from a finger.
ARE YOU READY!? ARE YOU READY?!
Amaxe Aug 31st 2010 5:38PM
Take your filthy hand off of my asp!
Aaron Hoffman Sep 1st 2010 2:19AM
Asps. Very dangerous.
You go first.
Amaxe Aug 31st 2010 5:36PM
I think that archaeology is the thing I am most excited over (aside from exploring the content). I do have the maxed Blacksmith and Alchemist, though sad to see no engineer... though that does make sense. Technically technology is new, not ancient
